James Olin Hazelhurst, also known as Jimmy, was born on November 9, 1951 at Mt. Sinai Hospital in Miami Beach, FL to the late Henry and Rosa-Lee Hazelhurst. James grew up in Miami and attended Miami Northwestern Senior High School. James joined the US Army in 1973.
James was a man of many talents. James had his own auto shop business in the early 1980s. He also was an accomplished musician and singer. James was an outstanding baritone saxophone player who played with Ike and Tina Turner in 1976. James taught himself to play other instruments as well. This talent, along with his amazing singing voice, created the opportunity for James to join several jazz bands who travelled around the US to perform. Some of the groups include The Platters, The New International Platters, and Derrick & The Motowners. Between 1974-1976, James landed a recording contract and recorded several independent songs which can be heard on Youtube. James continued to perform until the 2010s.
On September 30, 2024, after a battle with cancer and other health complications, James entered eternal rest.
James leaves behind his son- Dwayne (Tan) Scott, daughter -Satara Hazelhurst (Brian) Scott, grandchildren- Jamal (Ciara) Scott, Jala Scott, Mason Scott, Maxwell Scott, and great-grandson- Braylen Scott. His brother- William Hazelhurst. His sisters- Dela Grant, Helen Hayes, Cathey Hazelhurst-Scott (predeceased), and Fredi Gordon. A host of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
