James Henderson Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by James A. Dyal Funeral Home on Dec. 5, 2025.
James "Jim" Bryan Henderson, 80, of Summerville, SC, passed away peacefully on December 4, 2025, at home surrounded by family. Born on September 6, 1945, in Shelby, NC, he was the son of the late James Henry Henderson and Sarah Katherine Givens.

Jim proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps. Following his military service, he worked and retired from Hoover Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Summerville after 46 years of working as a mechanic. He married the love of his life, Pamela Henderson, and the two shared 30 wonderful years together until her passing. Jim was known for sense of humor and personality. To his family and closest friends, he was "Pawpaw" and "Gunny," titles he embraced with pride. He loved fishing, spending time in his woodshop, and tinkering in his garage. One of the greatest joys of his later years was running the "Gunny School Bus," a nickname he affectionately gave to his daily routine of picking up his grandchildren from school and sporting events. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his loving children: Gina M. Knight (Roy), Wendy R. Henderson, Buffy H. Mason, Anthony J. Johnson (Rosha), Cindy L. Ballantine (Renne), and Amanda L. Bernard (Sean); 21 beloved grandchildren and 21 beloved great grandchildren; his former son in law, Perry Holtsberry, Jr.; his step brother, Ronnie Givens; as well as numerous beloved nieces and nephews, He was preceded in death by his loving wife; his parents; his stepfather, Theus Givens; and a son, Stephen D. Curtis.

A visitation of family and friends will be held on Wednesday, December 10, 2025, from 6pm to 8pm at James A. Dyal Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held on Thursday, December 11, 2025, at 2:00pm. Burial will immediately follow at Dorchester Memory Gardens.
