Rev Jim was a kind person and far too modest to speak of the challenges through which his faith led him. I asked him 15 years or so ago if he would please share some of it in letters with my wife and I so that I could pass on this faith affirming story with my children. He included family anecdotes, sayings as well as some inspiration from scripture that was important to him and for us to know. He kept up with those letters through the years, usually in the spring, sometimes in summer and fall too. On reflection, he seemed to love the time he got to spend on the farm and spoke gratefully of the return of the flowers with the spring and visits by any wildlife. I will remember him, the letters and the faith lived they relate for the rest of my days. We were blessed by his witness and the peace that we felt through his words..

Jimmy Dale is the name our family used to call Pastor Jim.
While I wish I had been closer to my cousin, I miss him already. His kind ministry of letters over the years has helped me, and our family, understand many things that weren't clear to us in our younger years.
Overcoming poverty, polio, cancer, and more, he entered and remains a vibrant part of so many people's lives. Our joy and blessing is having known him.
Remembering you with love,
Cousin Jim....

Howie as we oftened called him was the kindest honest men I´ve ever known. Heaven has gained a great man and we are left with a loss of another great teacher. Forever loved by many

In the late 1960s Reverend Howie was visiting Vacation Bible School at Reno Bethel Presbyterian Church. The craft that day was to turn gallon jugs into piggy banks. We used corks for legs, pipe cleaners for tails and "Magic Markers" to decorate the rest. One of the teachers carefully cut the coin slot.

We were urged to give our creations a name and I proudly chose "Reverend Howie" for my new piggy bank. Little did I know that Reverend Howie would show up at our table just after that. To my great embarrassment the teacher asked Rev. Howie to guess the name of my bank. Rev. Howie guessed something clever like "Legion". I was too embarrassed to tell him the real name I had chosen.

As the teacher announced the name with a laugh I must have been beet red. Without skipping a beat, Reverend Howie reached into his pocket, pulled out a nickel and deposited it into his namesake. "I´ve never had anything named after me. Thank you so much, Willy!"

I will always remember getting duck and goose eggs at his house for Easter. I can still hear his voice.

I had the honor of meeting Mr Howie at my place of employment. I am so blessed to have met Mr Howie; and through him, I met some wonderful people that helped care for him in these last years. I have such respect and admiration for his strength, integrity, and overall kindness; and his awesome sense of humor..I remember talking to him about my grandparents farm, and about a gooseberry bush there; I had some gooseberries in the freezer from that bush, and Mr Howie made us a pie from them..some years later, he brought in his album from around 1975 titled Gooseberry Pie....so, gooseberries will forever be associated with Mr Howie in my mind

Rev. Howie will always be thought of by me with lots of love. I knew him since I was little. He baptized my brother and me together. He came to our house regularly for Bible lessons, then supper and Rack-O or other games with my parents. I'll never forget his laugh or when we visited his home and a chick hatched in my hand. I could go on and on. He gave me great memories, great lessons, and he will be missed.
