James Hughes Obituary

James "Jim" Ryland Hughes, Jr.

November 25, 2025

James "Jim" Ryland Hughes Jr., 90, of Smith Mountain Lake, passed away on November 25, 2025, after a brief illness. Jim was a devoted husband, father, friend, and respected leader in the banking community whose life was marked by integrity, dedication, and leadership.

Jim was preceded in death by his father, James Ryland Hughes Sr.; his mother, Doris Tucker Hughes; his sister, Janice Hughes Inman; and his brother, Gerald Wayne Hughes. He is lovingly survived by his wife, Patti Mann Hughes; his daughter, Vicky Hughes Simpson of Richmond; his son, James Ryland Hughes III (Jean) of Pine Knoll Shores, NC; and his daughter, Tammy Hughes Brock of Tyler, Texas; five grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.

Jim found some of his greatest joys at Smith Mountain Lake. He cherished starting and ending his days sitting on his porch with Patti by his side, taking in the peaceful, ever-changing views of the water and mountain. Sharing his love for the lake with family and friends, Jim was often found taking boat rides and watching generations of his loved ones enjoying the water. Smith Mountain Lake was where Jim felt happiest, and it remained a constant source of comfort throughout his life.

Jim's professional life showcased his commitment and leadership. He began his career at Lynchburg National, which later became Fidelity National and then Central Fidelity. He went on to serve as President of Liberty Bank of Bedford before returning to Central Fidelity, where he later retired for the first time. In 1998, Jim came out of retirement to become an integral leader as the CEO of the newly founded Bank of the James, where he played an instrumental role in its creation and early success until his retirement in 2004. His vision, steady guidance, and years of experience made a lasting impact on colleagues and the banking community as a whole.

Family and friends are invited to a visitation on Friday, December 5, from 3 to 5:00 p.m. at Heritage Funeral Service, 427 Graves Mill Road, Lynchburg.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that memorial donations be made in Jim's honor to a charity of your choice.

Yesterday

Patti, Vicky, Jimmy, Tammy and all of Jim´s grandchildren:
Jim loved you and bragged on all of you often. I am so sorry for your loss.
I worked for Jim at Central Fidelity from 1964 at various times throughout CFB´s history ending in 1998. I, then, worked for Jim at Bank of the James.
His leadership skills were the best.
My deepest sympathy,
Brenda Gray

Yesterday

I was Jimmy´s executive secretary during his time as Senior VP-Operations at Fidelity. I will always remember his bright smile and cheery disposition. Hard to believe he hired me in 1973, a long time ago.
