James "Jim" McGath, 71, of Avondale, Ariz., passed away unexpectedly on Sept. 12, 2023, in Custer, S.D.
Born in St. Joseph, Jim was son of the late Claire McGath and Mildred (Churchill McGath) Hillman.
He was preceded in death by his brother David McGath and sister Shirley Brennan.
He is survived by his wife Tammy; sister Bette (Russell) Otte; children: Jennifer (David) Gonzalez, Joshua McGath and Cori (David) Bennett; stepchildren: Audrey (Tom) Plummer and Jason Mooberry; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Jim graduated with St. Joseph's Class of 1971, and went on to establish a career in quality control at nuclear power plants throughout the United States, culminating with retirement in 2006 from Palo Verde Generating Station in Tonopah, Ariz.
Jim loved being outdoors and spending time with friends and family. During his years living on the west coast, Jim was an active member of a Jeep club, riding the mountains and dunes of western U.S. and Mexico. Jim loved to camp, cruise and travel throughout the world, and was especially partial to Hawaii and Alaska. In 2021, he achieved his life-long goal to visit the 48 contingent states in only four months.
Jim's faith was reflected in the way he treated others. He never had a bad word to say about anyone, and Jim gave everyone the benefit of the doubt. He never knew a stranger and was outgoing and cheerful with all he met. Jim opened his home to family and strangers alike and demonstrated his generous nature at any opportunity. Although Jim experienced deteriorating health for the last 17 years, he never complained and when asked how he was doing, he would simply smile and say, "can't complain."
A memorial of Jim's life will be at Calvary Bible Church of Dowagiac, on Oct. 7. A pictorial viewing will be held in the fellowship hall at noon, and services are to follow at 1 p.m. in the church sanctuary.

I worked with and for Jim for many years at Palo Verde. He was a great guy to work for, he always had my back, even if he suspected I was wrong, and that meant a lot, especially when I was in over my pay grade! Many thanks and much respect to this man. RIP Jim.

Jim was the baby among our cousins. I remember watching "Your Hit Parade" and they sang "Let Me Go Lover" . Jim was about 4 at the time and he was laying on the floor pounding his fists and crying as he sang along. We all were laughing hysterically.

My earliest memories of Jimmy was him being a bit more than a year younger than us, trying to follow us around and interrupt our terribly important play. Bette & I would eventually give in as all older siblings cousins do. Miss you Jimmy.
