James “Jim” Joyce, a devoted father, grandfather, and proud Navy veteran, passed away peacefully on December 9, 2025. Born on May 20, 1947, in Wamego, Kansas, Jim dedicated his life to service, family, and hard work—values that defined every season of his life.

Jim graduated from North Central High School in Kansas City, Missouri, before enlisting in the United States Navy. From 1968 to 1972, he served aboard the USS George Bancroft SSBN-643 submarine, earning the rank of Petty Officer. He was a gold recruit and submarine certified, distinctions that reflected his discipline, determination, and quiet courage. His time in the Navy shaped the steadfast character he carried throughout his life.

Following his military service, Jim spent just shy of 40 years working as a results foreman for KCP&L. His leadership, strong work ethic, and problem-solving skills earned him deep respect from colleagues and friends alike. But no achievement meant more to him than being a father. Jim’s greatest joy was found in the time he spent with his children and grandchildren. He treasured every opportunity to show up—coaching sports teams, turning wrenches, teaching home projects, or offering steady guidance. A true jack of all trades, he passed down not only skills, but confidence, patience, and grit.

Jim was an avid Kansas City sports fan, faithfully cheering on the Chiefs and the Royals. In his younger years, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and the simple peace of being outdoors. He carried a calm, grounded presence—one that made those around him feel steady, supported, and loved.

In 1973, Jim married his first wife, Barbara, becoming a father to her two sons, Wendell and Kelly. Together, they welcomed three children—Jamie, Patrick, and Jessica—and shared over twenty years of life and family before later parting ways. In 2014, Jim married Mary, who preceded him in death in 2017.

He is survived by his children: Jamie Davis; Patrick (Heather) Joyce; Jessica (Justin) Neighbors; Kelly (Mellissa) Zart; his siblings: Thomas Joyce; Kay Joyce; Joyce Joyce; and Sue Birk. His legacy continues through his beloved grandchildren—Lauren, Sonny, Sophie, Anthony, Michaela, Henry, Carter, and Luke—and five great-grandchildren Phoenix, Ansem, Remi, Ivy and Ray.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Mary Joyce; his parents, Francis and Loretta Joyce; his brother, William Joyce; and his son by marriage; Wendel Zart.

Jim will be remembered not only for his accomplishments, but for the unwavering love he poured into his family, the lessons he taught, and the strength with which he lived. His presence will be deeply missed, yet the impact of his life will continue to be felt in the hearts of all who knew him.

“The sunset is the sailor’s reminder that every journey ends in light.”

After a life of dedication, courage, and deep love, Jim has now reached that gentle light—his final harbor of peace.

Visitation will be held at 3:00 PM on Saturday, December 13, 2025, at Dengel & Son Mortuary – Louisburg Chapel, 1 Aquatic Drive, Louisburg, Kansas 66053. Military honors will be provided by the Louisburg VFW Post 7348 and American Legion Post 250.
