Dr. James Kellerman, a devoted husband, beloved father and grandfather, esteemed educator, and decorated veteran, passed away peacefully Sunday, July 13, 2025, surrounded by loved ones.
He was born on March 14, 1934, in Johnstown, Pa., to the late James Baird and Annie (Shoemaker) Kellerman. In 1981, James married the love of his life, Patricia "Tricia" Weldon. Their 44-year union was a testament to love, partnership, faith, and family. Together, they raised three beautiful children: G.G., Bradley, and Ashley.
He graduated from Largo High School in Florida and attended Western Kentucky State College before beginning his first job as a teacher and coach at Valencia Community College, a role he held until the onset of the Korean War.
James joined the United States Army, where he faithfully served in the Korean War as a cryptographer. Upon receiving an honorable discharge, he decided to use the benefits associated with the GI Bill to further his education. He earned both his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees from Florida State University. He went on to receive his Doctorate in Education from Nova University in 1975.
Throughout his distinguished career in education, James held numerous leadership roles and received countless awards for his service and excellence. In 1977, he was named Director of the Florida Association of Community Colleges. In 1986, he was named Chancellor of the North Orange County Community College District, overseeing a population of over 500,000 – the largest district in the United States. He served as Executive Director / CEO of Missouri Community College Association where he was honored with the MCCA Meritorious Service Award in 2006. He also received the National Leadership Award from the University of Texas at Austin College of Education and the Dean's Award for Excellence in Community College Leadership from the University of Missouri – St. Louis (UMSL) in 2006-2007. James created the first Phi Theta Kappa All-State Team program that awarded sponsored scholarships to two scholars from each of Missouri's 2-year colleges, which is a model that has been replicated in over 35 states.
James was employed as the first director of Capital City CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate for Abused and Neglected Children) in Jefferson City. He and Tricia served this organization for 6 years. James has said this was his most meaningful position of his career.
Striving to continuously be community focused, James served on the Board of Directors for Operation Bugle Boy and also the Board of Director for the Boys and Girls Club. He was a long-standing member of the Kiwanis Club. James was deeply committed to advancing education on a national level. He served on the Board of Directors of the American Association of Community Colleges and on the National Advisory Committee for the U.S. Department of Education.
James was an avid golfer, and he and Tricia shared a passion for cheering on the Florida State University Seminoles and Kansas City Chiefs. When asked where Tricia was, James would always say, "right here by my side, like she always is." Together they enjoyed movies, cruises, and spending time with their grandchildren playing cards and board games.
Rooted in their Christian faith, the Kellermans were longtime members of First Baptist Church, providing their children with a strong Christian foundation. James and Tricia are now members of Concord Baptist Church, where they have found great joy and fellowship in their Sunday school class taught by Dick Herford.
