J.W. Kinzer
April 28, 1928 - July 24, 2025
James Willard Kinzer, 97, of Prestonsburg, Kentucky, passed away peacefully on July 24, 2025. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great-grandfather, veteran, and community leader, Willard lived a life defined by faith, integrity, and service. Born in Allen, Kentucky, on April 28, 1928, to Samuel and Rosa (King) Kinzer, Willard's life reflected the strength and grit of his Eastern Kentucky roots. At just 16, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where a last-minute reassignment during World War II spared him from a fatal ship explosion-an event that instilled in him a profound sense of purpose and gratitude that shaped the rest of his life.
In 1945, he married the love of his life, Lucy Marie Miller. Together they built a life of love, faith, and dedication, raising a family and sharing 70 beautiful years of marriage until Lucy's passing in 2015. Their deep involvement in the United Methodist Church and unwavering support of local causes-especially the building of churches, schools, and the Mountain Arts Center-left a lasting legacy across the region. Willard led the Kinzer Companies with vision and determination, growing the family's well drilling operation into a major presence in the natural gas industry. Even into his 90s, he remained an active force in the business. But it was never just about success-it was about doing things right, taking care of people, and giving back to his community.
Later in life, Willard developed a love for drag racing, which became one of his greatest passions. He took pride in building and racing cars that reached incredible speeds, embracing the technical challenge and thrill with the same energy he brought to every chapter of his life. That passion reflected the essence of who he was-bold, curious, and never afraid to take on something new.
Held an honorary doctorate from the University of Pikeville and served faithfully on numerous boards, including Christ United Methodist Church, the Mountain Arts Center, Wesley Christian School, and others.
He was a lifetime member of the American Motorcycle Association and the NHRA, but it was his kindness, humility, and wisdom that left the deepest impression on those who knew him.
Willard was preceded in death by his beloved wife Lucy; his parents; three sons-Willard Jr. and twins Larry and Gary; his sister Nellie Lafferty; and his brother Jerome Kinzer.
He is survived by his sons Terry Gene Kinzer (E. Lee) and Jerry Dean Kinzer (Debbie); his grandchildren Suzanne Kinzer Hyden, Jeri Lynn Kinzer Copley (Morris), James Brandon Kinzer (Moriah) and Teri Lee Kinzer Crum (Barry); nine great-grandchildren-Bayley (Seth), Kylie, Ashton (Tate), Laiken, Noah, Barrett, Will, Baron, and Kinzer Elizabeth; and one great-great-grandchild, Lucy. He is also survived by his brother Raymond Kinzer; close family friend Jimmy Ray Key; and a host of beloved nieces, nephews, and friends.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to Willard's dedicated caregivers-Margaret Holbrook, Helen Akers, Pam Akers, Ruby Moore, and Tealie Prater-whose compassionate care brought dignity and comfort in his final years.
A celebration of his life will be held at 2:00 pm on Monday, July 28, 2025, at Allen United Methodist Church in Allen, KY, with Scottye Sparks officiating. Entombment will follow at the Hall-Kinzer Cemetery. Visitation will be after 6:00 pm Sunday at Hall Funeral Home,
