Jim Kleinschmidt passed away on October 1, 2022 at the Madrid Home in Madrid, Iowa, where he had lived for the past 14 years. Visitation will be held from 4-6 pm on Thursday, October 6, with Chaplet of Divine Mercy prayed at 5:40 at St. Malachy Catholic Church in Madrid, with Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 11:00 am on Friday, October 7, at St. Malachy's with lunch to follow. Interment at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery will follow at a later date.
Jim was born in Red Wing, Minnesota. He graduated from Ames High School and attended Iowa State University where he studied Hotel/Restaurant/Institution Management. At 22 years old, Jim sustained life-altering injuries after he was struck by a car while riding his bicycle. For the past 37 years, Jim endured every trial and physical challenge that came his way with grace and strength.
In his early life, Jim enjoyed running, bartending, swimming and lifeguarding, attending Mass and spending time with family and friends; in more recent years, he enjoyed music, movies, prayer, and visits from family and the caring staff and co-residents of the Madrid Home. His quiet courage, depth and faith during difficult years have made an eternal impact on his whole family, and made waves in the wider community of all who knew him.
Jim is survived by his brother John Kleinschmidt (Stella); sisters, Mary Spuzello, Carol Zimmerman (Bob), and twin sister Judith Kleinschmidt (Rodrigo Formas), and seven nieces and nephews: John Walker (Claire), Tony (Megan), Theresa (Jordan), Seth, Tanner, Hannah, and Gabriel.
Jim is preceded in death by his parents, John and Doris.
Memorials to Jim may be made to The Madrid Home. Madrid, Iowa.

My memories of Jim are ones of him as a student in my English class at Ames, IA school. One year, I broke my arm and I can still see Jim and Judy come laughing into my room after school asking to sign the cast on my arm.

Jim and all his family showed such amazing strength, courage, and love through all the years following Jim's accident was amazing.

Jim, Judy, and Carol, you were some of my favorite students.
