James Rupert "Peno" Leonard, 90, of Batesville, passed away on Dec. 3, 2025, in Batesville. He was born on Nov. 14, 1935, in Salado to Ralph and Dishie Mae Varnell Leonard.
Peno worked as a public accountant for over 50 years. He thoroughly enjoyed his work and his clients that became friends. He was also business partners with Don Ferguson for over 40 years at Karpet Korner. He was the last surviving member of the Arkansas National Guard unit sent to guard the Little Rock Nine. He enjoyed his community, spending time at the office, gardening, and sharing coffee with friends. Above all, he loved his family and cherished every moment spent with them. He was especially proud of his two grandchildren. He was of the Methodist faith.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Billy Wayne Leonard and Sammy Ray Leonard; and his sisters, Mary Wanda Leonard and Myna Sue Pearce.
Survivors include his two sons, Brett Leonard (Bobbie) and Blake Leonard (Angie); and his grandchildren, Braden Leonard and Brooke Shirley (Grayson). He is also survived by his brother, Russell Leonard (Martha); his sisters, Melba James and Nancy Rutledge (Keith); along with many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Dec. 11, 2025 at 11:00 A.M. at the Qualls Batesville Funeral Service Chapel with Troy Herrington officiating.
Arrangements by Qualls Funeral Homes.
Burial will follow at Egner Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 10:00 A.M. until service time.
