James Leonard Obituary

James "Jimmy" Leonard

September 16, 1954 - January 18, 2026

James Joseph Leonard, age 71, of Linwood, passed away peacefully at home on January 18, 2026. Jimmy is survived by his wife of 52 years, Tina (Di Giacinto) Leonard; his three sons, Jimmy (Rebecca), Andrew (Karen), and Matthew; his grandchildren, Grace, Katie, Christian and Emily; his sisters, Kathy Leonard Caramma and Reenie Leonard. Jim was predeceased by his parents, Ann and Joseph. Jim grew up in Ventnor NJ and over the years he kept in touch with all of his childhood friends, sharing happy memories of their youth. He attended Holy Spirit High School and Stockton College. Jim was a proud member of the Atlantic City Police Department for 31 years, where he made lifelong friends who became, and will always be, Family. Upon retiring from the ACPD, Jim was asked to join the U.S. Department of Homeland Security as a Range Master at the FAA Tech Center. This began a whole new adventure, and Jim truly enjoyed every day he spent during his 22 years there. Jimmy's favorite pastime was riding his bicycle with his loyal biking buddies, who would definitely agree that Jimmy did more talking and laughing than bicycling. Jimmy was the most selfless, humble, and kindest soul you could ever meet. He loved helping others and he always did so quietly and with genuine compassion. Jimmy was a simple guy who lived a full and meaningful life. He adored being a husband, dad, and grandfather. Jimmy was the heart and soul of our Family. His sons and grandchildren were the joys of his life. He gave everything, and then some, to his family, and we thank him with all our hearts. Please remember Jimmy for his hearty laugh, infectious smile, and witty one-liners. He was a good man who loved life and everyone he met throughout his journey here on Earth. Jim found delight in every moment of every day. We are so proud to call him ours, and we feel such gratitude for having had the gift of Jimmy in our lives. At Jimmy's request, a private family service will be held. In lieu of flowers, for those who wish to make an expression of remembrance, the family suggests: The Atlantic City Police Foundation, a non-profit that enhances public safety and community events for both the police officers and the citizens of Atlantic City. Donations can be sent to: Atlantic City Police Foundation, PO Box 8323, Atlantic City, New Jersey 08404. Condolences may be extended to the family at ghwimberg.com

I've been blessed to have know Jim for many years now since he became my daughter's father in law. Through many family occasions and social events over the years I've witnessed Jim's absolute love and devotion to his family and friends. He was a gentle soul who had an infectious laugh and smile. No matter what the conversation was about Jim would engage you and make you feel like what you had to say was important. I would like to say that he was one of a kind but I see so very much of him in my son in-law Andrew that I can only say he still lives on. I've no doubt that our Lord said to him on his arrival " well done my good and faithful son"

Tina I am saddened to hear of Jimmy´s passing. I have always treasured both of you and friends from high school and beyond. We have not kept in touch but Jimmy´s support during a rough time when Peter was killed helped me more than I ever could put into words. Your love for each other is enviable in such a good way the true definition of family. Please feel free to reach out if I can ever be of support to you and your family. My cell is 609-335-3695. Jimmy and I were firearms instructors for many years, and always competed in the instructors category. He was a great guy, a good shot, and a lot of fun.
Our sincerest condolences to Tina and family. Take comfort in knowing we will all meet again in heaven one day for all eternity. The only difference is, Jimmy beat us there. Love, Jim & Madeleine.

Tina and the Leonard family

Our sincere condolences on the passing of Jimmy . I fist met him thru football at Holy spirit in the 60s. I reconnected again with him in the 70s when we both became police officers. I had the pleasure of working with him many times throughout my career. I never left a meeting with him without a smile on my face , he was that kind of person. Jimmy was a great man and a great Police officer. I hope you have some comfort in your memories of him and knowing how much he was respected and loved in the Law enforcement community . Rest in peace Jimmy , thank you or your service my friend !

Jim was a gentleman to whomever he met. He was kind and always offered his help. That's what I observed over about 40 years of working with him here and there. If you ever worked the main gate at the Tech Center, then you'll probably remember Jim driving up in the winter with a box full of hand warmers for the guys or coffee and asking if you needed anything. At the range, he always took an interest in what you were doing, even if he wasn't working your range. That's the Jim I knew. Others before self. Our blessing to his family and friends. May a loving and merciful Father bless and keep you, Jim.
