James Long Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Hostetler Funeral Home on Jan. 14, 2023.
James W. "Butchie" Long, Jr., 66, a resident of Parsons, passed from this life on Wednesday, January 11, 2023, at his home.
Butch was born on Thursday, March 8, 1956, a son of the late James W. "Butch" Long, Sr., and Stanis Lee Long. He is survived by one son, Zachary Long and wife, Ashley, and one grandson, Zachary Long, Jr., all of Hendricks. Also surviving is one stepmother, Beth Long, of Parsons, three stepsiblings, Amy, Bruce, and David, two nieces, Tammy Michael and husband, Pete, and Krista Owens and husband, Tim, one nephew, Tink Greenlief and wife, Jennifer of Parsons, five great nieces and nephews, James Payden, Alexa Lee, Liam Connor Kee, Ethan Michael, and Maci Lee, and his caring and helpful neighbor and friend, Pat Usnik.
Butch was preceded in death by a sister, Brenda Lee Long.
Butch graduated from Parsons High School with the Class of 1974 and was known for his talent playing football. He went on to further his education having graduated from Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science. Butch worked as a funeral director for several funeral homes before returning to Tucker County where he served as the night auditor at Canaan Valley Resort. He gave back to the community by volunteering as a coach for little league football and enjoyed watching his former players succeed throughout their high school careers. Butch enjoyed hunting, watching NASCAR and ball games, but the hobby he was most passionate about was playing his guitars. Everyone who heard the J.W. Long Band, or the Big Dawgs play, knew his passion for his music. His humor and stories could bring a smile to anyone's face. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends.
Visitation will be held at Hostetler Funeral Home on Monday from 5PM until 8PM. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, January 17, 2023, at 11AM. Rev. Neil Parsons will officiate, and interment will follow in Parsons City Cemetery.
