James Lowell Obituary
Obituary published on Legacy.com by Wolanin Funeral Home, Inc. on May 5, 2025.
James "Jimmy" Edward Lowell Jr., age 50, of Newport, passed away on April 30, 2025, at Upstate University Hospital in the arms of his wife Melissa, after a months-long battle with cancer. He was born October 12, 1974, in Herkimer, NY, a son of James Lowell Sr. and the late Joan Sweeney.
Jimmy, as he was affectionately known, had a tough exterior and a kind heart, living a life characterized by a quiet dedication to family, hard work, and helping others. After graduating from West Canada Valley Central School District in 1993, Jimmy left behind his high school football career and teenage job of working the farm to pursue a Commercial Driver's License.
For 27 years thereafter, he embraced his newfound calling as a truck driver with an impassioned pride. Through his years of experience at Brown's Feed, Teal's, and then Pitt Ohio, Jimmy grew from a sometimes overeager new guy to a "human GPS" who not only got deliveries done faster than everyone else, but also was relied on as a safety trainer, dispatcher, and mentor for new drivers. His strict adherence to a day's hard work made him a model for others at the terminal, until the end.
In 1998, after 2 years of dating, Jimmy proposed to his girlfriend Melissa after climbing to the top of an Adirondack peak on a hot October day in his Carhartt jacket with a ring hidden in his pocket. Together they made their home in Newport, NY where they would live together for 25 years and raised a family of one son and one daughter. Jimmy took immense pride in his children, Nathaniel and Paige. From working late nights and extra jobs to get them what they wanted to coaching their soccer and basketball games and doing everyday chores so they could focus on their dreams, he showed up every day with all of himself, without fail, to provide for them and their love, happiness, and well-being.
Outside of work and family life, Jimmy found purpose and peace in the outdoors, his home, his lawn, his garage, his vehicles, and helping others. From sweeping Hawthorne Road to making sure he had the best lawn in town and spending countless hours doing housework for friends and family at no cost, his deep care for productivity and purpose shaped how he spent his free time. His love for hunting created life-lasting bonds with friends and animals. His countless hours speeding through the waves on the boat, riding topless through country roads in the Jeep, and traversing rugged trails on the side-by-side allowed for intimate moments of reflection and shared memories with those he cherished most.
Jimmy's journey on Earth was one marked by love, dedication, and deep care for everything he did. His passing has left a void in the hearts of his family, friends, and many more whose lives were impacted by their interactions with him. We ask that you remember him not for the way his life ended, but for the way it was lived, and for the profound impact it had on the lives of those who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Jimmy is survived by his beloved wife Melissa; son Nathaniel; daughter Paige; father James Lowell Sr. and his stepmother Geraldine; sisters Doranne (Dave) Leshinski, Robin (Chuck) Warner, and Linda (Jeff) Gifford; brothers Fred (Kathy) Lowell, Jim (Marylee) Miller, Les Miller, and Doug (Liz) Miller; and brothers-in-law David Dziedzic and Brad Davis.
Jimmy is also survived by cherished friends who were like brothers; Dave Dawson, Dave McClean, Tom Yauger, and Kaenin Coonrod. His best buddy Finley is still in the yard looking for him to play ball.
Jimmy is preceded in death by his mother Joan; infant sister Kathleen; aunts Marion Taylor, Edna Reitz, Pearl Swart, and Betty Boyer; uncles Charles and Bob Lowell; and his best friend Harvey.
