James Malkus Obituary
Obituary published on Legacy.com by Am Israel Mortuary - San Diego on Feb. 25, 2024.
James Alan Malkus was born in Chicago May 5th, 1937. He graduated from South Shore high school in 1954 and lettered in tennis. He excelled in school, and his love for learning led him to the University of Chicago, where he continued to shine, eventually earning his degree from the University of Chicago Law School.
After earning his law degree, joined the Navy, serving in the Judge Advocate General Corps. He was first stationed in Norfolk, VA and eventually came out to San Diego, following his older brother Bob, a Navy doctor, whom he admired and loved to no end.
Jim was a partner in a local law firm for many years. In 1980, Governor Jerry Brown appointed him to the San Diego Superior Court. He served as a Superior Court Judge for over 2 decades and his commitment to justice and fairness touched the lives of many, earning him the admiration of colleagues and community members alike.
In retirement, Jim remained active and social as ever, devoting his time and energy to the men's club at Congregation Beth Israel and enjoying his favorite pastimes of tennis and golf.
His family, however, was his greatest source of pride and joy. With his first wife Marion, Jim welcomed three children into the world, and later found happiness again with his beloved wife Gail, embracing her three daughters as his own. His six grandchildren brought him endless delight, and he cherished every moment spent with them.
Jim and Gail continued to travel to countless countries in retirement, exploring and making memories wherever they went. He had a deep love for animals, especially his cherished dogs. He also loved penguins and had a collection that once won him 1st place in the Del Mar Fair.
Above all, James will be remembered for his unwavering love and pride in his family, his sharp intellect, and his generosity. And though Jim may no longer be with us in person, his spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
James was survived by his three children, Heather, Matt, and Todd, and three stepdaughters, Dana, Carin, and Sari.
A celebration of Jim's life will be held at Congregation Beth Israel on Tuesday, February 27th, at 11:00 am, followed by a luncheon reception where friends and family can come together to honor his memory and share stories of his remarkable life.
