After his tour in the Marines, James moved to Oakland, CA, where he was employed as a mechanic with the Oakland Public School System. His commitment to his work and his community was evident in all that he did.

Later, James returned to Gulfport, MS, where he met the love of his life, Marlana Cook. The two were married in 2004, embarking on a journey together built on love, friendship, and shared memories. James was well known for his love of antique cars and trucks, delighting in restoring and showcasing these timeless vehicles. He was also famous among family and friends for his exceptional barbecue skills, always ready to fire up the grill and host a memorable cookout. His birthday celebrations became cherished traditions, bringing together family and friends for joy, laughter, and good food.
