WELLMAN-James Richard Miller, age 71, of Wellman, died Tuesday, November 25, 2025, at his home.
James was born July 12, 1954 to Willis and Lois (Steckly) Miller in Iowa City. An Iowa Mennonite School graduate of 1972 and Hesston College attendee, he lived in Wellman most of his life. James spent 14 sunny years in California honing his carpentry skills, then returned to Iowa and employed those skills doing building maintenance for Johnson County and remodeling work with his brother-in-law. He was a member of the Wellman Mennonite Church, gardening enthusiast and friend to the bees. Known as the “Honey Guy” at multiple farmers’ markets, this avid apiarist treasured interacting with all who visited his Wild Cat honey stand. James was also a Purple Martin landlord, who enjoyed teaching others how to attract and maintain their own colonies. He loved singing and was a dedicated tenor in The Quire of Eastern Iowa since 2001.
James is survived by his daughter, Jennifer (Cheyanne) Silver of Dayton, Ohio; brother John (Kristen) Miller of Palm Desert, California; brother Lowell (Lillian) Miller of Redlands, California; sister Lois (Al) Dehogues of Kalona; granddaughters Eden and June Silver; several nieces, nephews and many many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Warren Miller.
Memorial service will be held at later date. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Wellman is caring for James and his family. Tributes may be made at www.powellfuneralhomes.com
