James Monahan, Jr.

Spotswood - James Monahan, Jr., 67, of Spotswood passed away on Friday, March 19, 2021 at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick.

Born and raised in the Pleasant Plains section of Staten Island, New York, Jim settled in Spotswood in 1989. He retired in 2007 after 43 years as an elevator mechanic with Local 3 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers of Long Island City, New York, where he worked throughout many different businesses in the New York City area before going on to work for the PS Marcato Elevator Company, also of Long Island City. Jim loved spending time with his grandchildren and he encouraged and cheered them on during all of their sports activities. He was dedicated to all of his family and friends. He enjoyed helping everyone with small jobs and projects and just lending a hand on odd jobs. He enjoyed fishing, crabbing, watching and playing baseball, 70s and 80s music and watching the horses run at Monmouth Park Racetrack. Jim will be missed by all who knew him.

Predeceased by his parents, James and Ruth Monahan, he is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 47 years, Kathleen Monahan; his children Michael and his companion Samantha Kurland and Kristin Vanleeuwen and her husband Matthew; his siblings Patricia Giacalone and her husband Joseph, Doreen Monahan and William Monahan and his wife Holly, his grandchildren Tyler and Juliana, and; many nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will begin at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, March 24th from Spotswood Funeral Home, 475 Main Street, Spotswood, followed by interment in Maplewood Cemetery, Freehold. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, March 23rd from 4:00 to 8:00 PM at the Funeral Home. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the restrictions placed on gatherings and activities, all current guidelines are to be observed during visitations, including the use of face coverings and social distancing.
