James Andrew Mong

Mong, James Andrew, - 86, of Absecon, passed away on Tuesday, November 2, 2021. He was at home surrounded by his family and passed in peace. Jim was born in Galloway to William (Harry) and Pearl Mong and was the second oldest of five siblings, Bill (William), John, Dorothy, and Pearl. After graduating from Pleasantville High School, he joined the U.S. Marines where he served his country for four years and was stationed overseas in Okinawa, Japan. Upon his honorable discharge, Jim retuned to Absecon where he joined the Absecon police force after graduating from the New Jersey State Police Training Academy. While on the force in 1973, Jim rescued 11 senior citizens from the deadly fire at the Street's Rest Home in Pleasantville. His act of heroism garnered recognition from news organizations across the country including the front page of the New York Times to local papers in California. Jim loved his family. He was most proud of the Absecon home he and his father built in 1965-67 for his then fiancé, Barbara. Jim and Barbara filled the home with three daughter whom he loved dearly. In addition to being a loving father and husband and respected police officer, he was the proud Pop-Pop of James Lucas Carrion-Mong and Ryan Patrick Connaughton to whom he has passed his love of golf. Jim ran a successful concrete business, was a volunteer fire fighter on the Absecon Fire Department, member of the Dirty Dozen Golfing Crew and member of the Bayview Hunting Club. Jim is survived by his wife, Barbara (Palermo); his daughters, Dr. Jessica Mong and her spouse, Audrey Carrion, Christina Mong and her partner, David Cormany, and Jaime Mong and her fiancé, Patrick Connaughton; his grandsons, James Lucas Carrion-Mong and Ryan Patrick Connaughton; and his siblings, Bill Mong, Dottie McCaffrey and Pearl Koteles. A viewing will be on Saturday, November 6 from 9-11am followed by a brief memorial starting at 11am at Wimberg Funeral Home in Galloway, NJ 609-641-0001. On Saturday, November 13 a Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11am at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Absecon with entombment immediately following at Holy Cross Cemetery.
