James M. Moses passed away on January 31, 2026 in
Sheridan, Wyoming. He spent his final months being cared for by the wonderful staff of the Busy Bees and the Greenhouse Living.
Jim was born on April 22, 1939 to James C. and Marion Moses in Wolf Point Montana. He graduated from Wolf Point High School and married his high school sweetheart, June. Together they had two sons, Michael and Jeffrey. He was drafted into the Army, serving in the Intelligence Division during the Korean Conflict.
Jim worked his way through college and graduated from Denver University. Jim began his long banking career in Laramie, Wyoming with Capital Savings and Loan. He moved to Cheyenne with Wyoming State Bank which later became Key Bank. While in Cheyenne he met and married Barbara Harrison Sundahl. He was transferred to theDenver branch to build the real-estate division, and later to Cody, Wyoming to head up the Cody, Powell and Meeteetse Banks and work them through a transition of new ownership. He was then asked to move to Steamboat Springs, Colorado to start a new bank, which included a new charter, staffing, temporary facility and design and build a new bank building. Upon completion of that, First Interstate Bank asked him to build the Jackson bank which began his connection to and service for the Jackson Hole community. When Jim arrived to work in Jackson, First Interstate Bank was a kiosk in the grocery store with two employees. He began recruiting staff, renting space for them to work, and acquired land to build a new bank. He set up a program to assist employees with housing and included apartments in the new building. He became actively involved with the Jackson Hole Community Housing Trust, and assisted in the financing of many affordable housing projects for teachers, firefighters, law enforcement, and working families in Jackson.
With the backing of the FIB Foundation Jim helped get the Center for the Arts in Jackson built and served on the Center's board of directors until 2016. He served on the Community Foundation of Jackson Hole board as a member and president, and aided numerous non profit boards when they needed assistance of any kind. The Jackson Hole Chamber of Commerce named Jim 'Citizen of the Year' in 2008.
He was a proud mentor and supporter of the Teton County women who founded Womentum.
After retiring from First Interstate, Jim and a group of investors took over a financially defaulted Rocky Mountain Bank. As President, along with the investors who recapitalized the bank, he brought it back within a year, working with the existing employees and its previous board. His love for employees and his community was apparent throughout his time in Jackson and his career.
In 2018, Jim retired from banking and he and Bobbi moved to Palm Desert to enjoy time with granddaughters and warm walks all winter. They spent summers in
Sheridan, Wyoming andhelped care for his mother-in-law during her final years. He and Bobbi moved to Sheridan full time in 2023.
When not working Jim's passions were motorcycles and cars. He spent hours researching each and every vehicle he ever purchased. Sometimes rebuilding vintage bikes and always adding some fabulous accessories. Every holiday and many weekends were spent on motorcycles, exploring the back roads all over the states and Canada. He gave up the motorcycles, replacing them with sports cars when he moved to Jackson. No close racetracks to practice riding skills made that decision for him. He took excellent care of each vehicle so that when he wanted to trade for a new adventure there was always a ready buyer for the old.
He is preceded in death by his parents, James and Marion Moses, brother, Fritz, son, Michael, and grandson, Derek.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Barbara, brother Timothy (Joanne), son Jeff (Kelly), stepsons Charles Sundahl (Mia) and James Sundahl (Lacy), grandchildren Jessica Schmidt, Jazmin and Kaylee Sundahl, and great granddaughter Caroline Schmidt, nieces Alita Moses, Stacey and Clair, nephews Chris and Oliver Moses.
The family asks that any memorials be directed to Jackson Hole Community Housing Trust, Womentum of Jackson Hole, and Sheridan Memorial Hospital Foundation.
