James Edward Nickol, known to his family and friends as Jim, was born on March 31, 1950, just a day shy of April 1st, in Conrad, Montana, to Leo and Ruth Nickol. He was the fourth of eight children, joining his three older brothers, and later welcomed another brother and three sisters into the family.
Jim’s early years were spent in Great Falls, where he attended Catholic school. During the summers, he cherished time on the family farm east of Conrad. After graduating from high school in Conrad, Jim enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he served with honor, with his final station aboard the USS Frank Knox during the Vietnam War. Following his discharge, Jim took advantage of the GI Bill to attend vocational-technical school in Billings, laying the foundation for his lifelong career in farming.
On August 27, 1973, he married his beloved wife, Mona Peterson. Together, they built a life centered around their shared love of the land, beginning their farming journey in the same year. Jim continued to farm until his retirement in the fall of 2022. His legacy is carried on by his son, Tony, who now runs the farm and keeps the operation going for future generations.
Jim is survived by his wife of 51 years, Mona; son Tony (Lacy) and their children, Elizabeth and Augustus; son Owen and his children, Sabra and Cyrus; and his loyal dog, Bluey, a blue heeler. He is also survived by two brothers, three sisters, and a large extended family of nieces, nephews, and cousins. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Ruth, and his brothers Fred and Bill.
As per Jim’s wishes, he was cremated, and no formal services will be held. An informal gathering to celebrate his life will take place in the Spring of 2025.
Jim will be remembered for his quiet strength, his deep love for his family, and his dedication to the land that defined much of his life.
