James Edwin Oakley, lovingly known as Jim, passed away peacefully at his home in Yuma, Arizona, on April 22, 2025, just one week shy of his 77th birthday.
Born on April 29, 1948, in Detroit, Michigan, to Edward and Lois Oakley, Jim lived a life rooted in service, faith, and family. He served his country with honor as a member of the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam War volunteering for three tours from 1968 - 1973.
On June 18, 1971, Jim married Sherry Ellen Roach, beginning a devoted partnership that spanned more than five decades. Together they raised two children, Dayrol (wife Tammi) and Kristine (husband Randy). Jim was a proud grandfather to five, Dustin, Trevor, Jessica, Heaven and Christopher and a loving great-grandfather to three, cherishing each role he played in their lives.
In 1986, Jim answered a calling to ministry, becoming a full-time minister in the Church of the Nazarene. He served faithfully and wholeheartedly sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ continuing in various roles and capacities until very recently. His ministry from the West coast to East coast touched countless lives through his compassionate leadership, unshakable faith, and steady presence.
Jim was also known for his quick wit and joyful sense of humor. He loved to make people laugh - sharing jokes and stories wherever he went - and even in his final days, he continued to lift spirits with a well-timed punchline or a playful smile. His ability to bring joy, even amid hardship, was one of his greatest gifts.
Jim often said "I know of no strangers, only friends I haven't met yet".
He found peace in simple pleasures -spending time with and watching his family grow, boating on his beloved vessel, Visitation, and casting a fishing line -moments that reflected his appreciation for life's quiet, meaningful rhythms.
Jim will be remembered for his enduring faith, his love for his family, his service to others, and the laughter he freely gave. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched, and in every smile sparked by a memory of him.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to any A rated veteran charity.

I had the privilege of being in Bible College with my friend. We were able to meet together a few times after graduation. He was exactly the same as the obituary stated. God bless you during this time, Sherry and your family. One of the good guys.
