Coach Phalen was my first basketball coach in Jr. High School. He was a tremendous coach and taught us so much about the fundamentals of basketball and life in general. Always enjoyed visits Coach and Dick when they would visit Bluffs and stop for coffee or a beer in town. Our whole family from Dad (Leland) on down send our thoughts and prayers to Mary and all the family.

I am extremely sorry to hear of Coach Phalen's passing. I played football for him at Rushville High School and he was by far the best coach I ever had, including my college coaches. I reconnected with him during my student teaching semester at Triopia High School and thereafter until his retirement because my employment allowed me to visit the Triopia High School cafeteria on a weekly basis. My deepest sympathies to the family and I will always remember Coach with the greatest respect!
Sincerely,
Dean M. Heitz
