James Plunkett Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Downs Funeral Home - Superior on Feb. 5, 2026.
James "Jim" M. Plunkett, 67, of Superior, died Tuesday, February 3, 2026, at his residence.

Jim was born in Superior on June 21, 1958, the son of F. Rolland and Joan (Malmquist) Plunkett. While growing up he spent summers on his uncle's farm and played basketball for Superior High School graduating with the class of 1977.

In June of 1979 he married Julie Stromberg and they started their family in Billings Park. He worked at Calvary Cemetery for 42 years, retiring in June of 2025. He also did work for Riverside Cemetery, Graceland Cemetery, Superior Hebrew Cemetery and was still working for St. Francis Cemetery. Together he and Julie owned and operated Plunkett's Memorials.

Following retirement, Jim enjoyed side by side riding and going to his grandkid's events. Jim loved spending time with his family. He was the person that would drop everything for his family and friends and always with a smile, if he gave you grief it meant he loved you.

He was preceded in death by his son, Brett; parents, Rolland and Joan; and sister, Janine McCusker.

Jim is survived by his wife of 46 years, Julie; daughters, Carrie (Matt) Lein of Cologne, MN, Crystal (Travis Miller) Plunkett of Superior and Jennie (Bryan) Tribbey of Superior; grandchildren, Elizabeth and Allen Lein and Gabe and Pearl Tribbey; siblings, Sue (Ernie) Swartz of Superior, Pat Plunkett of Superior, Debbie (Mike) Laurent of Cloquet; brother-in-law, Brian (Vici) McCusker; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be on Friday February 6th from 10:00 a.m. until the 12:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Francis Xavier Church, 2316 E 4th St., Superior, with Very Rev. Fr. James Tobolski as celebrant. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Green Bay Packer attire for Jim's services is encouraged.

So sorry to hear of Jim's passing. I talked to him recently. He told me he was driving down to Minneapolis to visit his daughter and grandkids. He will be missed by me and many more.
He would always greet me with that big smile of his.
