James Poon, age 99, passed away peacefully on October 17, 2024 at his home in Indian Hill, OH.
James came from China to the US shortly after the end of WW II to obtain his education. He started in San Francisco at USF. While there he met Virginia Thom, fell in love and after converting to Catholicism to prove his devotion to her, married and started a long adventure with her. While obtaining more education and training to become an ophthalmologist, they lived in St. Louis, Toledo, Boston, Indianapolis and finally settled down in Cincinnati where he started his successful practice.
During those early years they started a family which would eventually grow to seven children, six children in laws and eleven grandchildren. He loved to fish, play poker and occasionally golf. He would also make sure there was quality alone time with his wife. He worked tirelessly to provide a safe home and a good education for everyone. After retiring, he enjoyed spending winters in Naples, FL where he could golf more often, play poker and go out to dinner with his wife and friends. He will always be remembered for his kindness and loyalty and dedication to family.
As his 99 years caught up with him, he was constantly aided by his caregiver Jessie Lee during his last three years. He died peacefully with family by his side. He was preceded in death by his wife Virginia (10/22/21), his brothers Tso Fong, Tso Fun, Tso Chack, Tso Ding and Tso You, his sister Siu Yeung, and his nephews Raymond and Eddie. He is survived by daughters Christine Poon (Michael Tweedle), Liana Poon, Melanie Williamson (James), Jean Hogan (Robert), and Jeanette Caruso (James), sons Philip Poon (Alexandria) and Douglas Poon (Christine), and grandchildren David, Stephen (Abby), Benjamin, Grant, Nicholas, Madison, Ethan, Matthew, Maxwell, Cara and Maria.
Memorial Mass at St. John Fisher in Newtown, OH, Friday, October 25, 2024 at 9:00am. No Visitation. Burial will be for immediate family only.
