Dr. James David Price III, age 100, was born in Dayton, Ohio on July 1, 1925, and went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on December 12, 2025.
Dr. Price demonstrated academic ability from an early age, graduating high school before his seventeenth birthday. He served his country during World War II in the United States Navy, training as an aviation radioman and later participating in the Navy's V-12 officer program at Purdue University. While there, he earned a degree in electrical engineering with honors, launching a successful early career as an engineer with Illinois Bell and later with Pacific Telephone, RCA Laboratories, and The Franklin Institute.
Sensing a clear call to Christian ministry and scholarship, he pursued theological education at Los Angeles Baptist Theological Seminary and earned a Ph.D. in Hebrew and Biblical Literature from Dropsie in Philadelphia. Dr. Price devoted much of his life to teaching, research, and Bible translation, serving as a professor and later Academic Dean at Temple Baptist Seminary in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He was a key contributor to major Bible translation projects, including Executive Editor of the Old Testament for the New King James Version and translator and section editor for the Holman Christian Standard Bible. Throughout his life he was known for his intellectual rigor, deep faith, love for the Scriptures, and faithful service to the church, students, and family.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 76 years, Doris Price, his parents, James David Price II and Marilla Price Aud, his two sisters Francis Kannal and Grace Watt, his son James David Price IV and his granddaughter, Catherine Baumhardt.
He is survived by his daughters, Judith Olsen and Rebecca Richards and son, Jeffrey Price and nine grandchildren, twenty-eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.
Visitation will be held, Friday, December 19, 2025, 9:30 AM-10:30 AM at Chattanooga First Seventh-day Adventist Church, 7450 Standifer Gap Rd, Chattanooga, TN 37421. The service will begin at 10:30 AM with burial at Chattanooga National Cemetery, following the service.
