Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions - Southwest Louisville ChapelJames William Samples, age 72, passed away peacefully at home on March 14, 2026, in Louisville, Kentucky.
James was born in Baltimore, Maryland, to Logan Samples and Celeste DiDominicus. He proudly served his country in the United States Army for eight years, from 1973 to 1981, attaining the rank of Specialist (E-5). After his service he worked as a truck driver, until his retirement.
In December of 1973, James married the love of his life, Betty. Together they built a life centered on family, loyalty, laughter, and God. James was known for his warm heart, generous spirit, and sense of humor. He enjoyed spending time watching cartoons and the classic television series M*A*S*H, often sharing laughs with those around him. He was a man who gave freely of his time, energy, and love to everyone who knew him.
James is survived by his devoted wife, Betty; his children, Angela and JL; and his bonus daughter, Heather and husband, Michael. He was a proud grandfather and great-grandfather to Sean, his partner Christa and their children, Landon, Sophia, Kaydence, Brooklynn and Walker; Cami and Josh and their daughter, Jordyn; Casi; Dakota, her partner Jacob and their children, Hazel and June; James; Janna; Cameron: Ashlynn; Erin; and Logan.
He is also survived by his siblings, Ernie, Celeste, Diane, and Carrie.
James was preceded in death by his parents, Logan and Celeste, and by his siblings, Sarah, Shirley and Nick.
James will be remembered for his kindness, his humor, his devotion to God and his family, and the quiet strength with which he lived his life. His presence brought comfort and laughter to those around him, and his memory will live on in the many lives he touched.
Visitation will be on Monday, March 30, 2026 from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions, Southwest Louisville Chapel, 10304 Dixie Highway. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home followed by inurnment at Kentucky Veterans Cemetery Central in Radcliff, Kentucky.
