James J. Scully, age 88 years, of Voorhees, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 23, 2024. James was the beloved husband of the late Dolores May (nee Browning). Loving father of Dolores (Lori) A. Kawczynski and Kathleen D. Hassett. Father-in-law to David J. Kawczynski and Rudolph Sauer. He was the devoted grandfather of David (DJ) Kawczynski, Christopher J. Kawczynski, Rachel A. Hassett, and Stefanie L. Hassett. James was the great-grandfather of Damian Bray, Riley E. Clarke, and Scarlet M. Bray. Dear brother of John Scully, Maragret (Peggy) Aupperle, and the late Rita Scully, Catherine Wang, and Joseph Scully.
James was born, raised, and lived in Philadelphia for more than 50 years before moving to Leisuretowne, a 55+ community in Southampton, NJ, where he and Dolores resided for over 20 years. He was also resident of Brandywine Assisted Senior Living in Voorhees, NJ for a year and a half, where he was beloved by staff and even endearingly nicknamed "The Candyman," and "Santa Clause," for his generosity because he would hand out treats from his electric wheelchair.
James worked in fishing reel production for Penn Reels in Philadelphia for 50 years. A skilled do-it-yourselfer, he enjoyed tinkering in his garage and had a side business as a locksmith, though he was reluctant to accept payment for his work. His passion for cooking and baking brought joy to many, especially his best friend, Deborah. James also loved cars, spending mornings meticulously cleaning them with Windex for a showroom shine. He took pleasure in mowing lawns and sharpening knives for family and friends. An avid fisherman, he was known for expertly repairing Penn Reels.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral services which will include a viewing and mass on Saturday, July 27th, at the Church of the Holy Eucharist in Tabernacle, NJ.
LOCATION: The Church of the Holy Eucharist; 520 Medford Lakes Rd., Tabernacle, NJ 08088.
