James Sherman came into this world on February 23, 1960, and sadly, departed on November 7, 2023. He was born to William G. Sherman and Deanna Edwards Sherman in Austin, Minnesota, where they lived until 1964. Bill purchased a farm in Dexter, MN, and moved his family from Austin to the farm. Jim spent his entire childhood on the farm with his parents and siblings. He attended elementary and Jr. High school in Elkton and then finished up at Southland High School in Adams, MN.
When he finished school he worked a few interesting jobs, he built Silos in Minnesota and Iowa, and he worked for Loram Maintenance of Way, grinding rails across Minnesota, Montana, Colorado, and South Dakota. He worked in a Molybdenum Mine in Colorado before moving to Cheyenne, WY to pursue a career in Aircraft Maintenance. It was while attending school at Aero Tech that he met his future wife, Janice Stroud. She worked at the school and they developed a friendship that would turn into a marriage of best friends. They were married in August of 1985, and their daughter Sarah Marie Sherman was born in January of 1986, he was hired at American Airlines in May of 1986 and moved his family to Oologah, OK at the end of May 1986. In August of 1987, their son Lucas Roy Sherman was born which completed his beautiful family.
He lived in Oologah until he got the itch to farm again. He moved his family to a 160-acre farm in 1992 in Talala, OK, and stayed for 5 years. We both loved it and hated to leave but health issues dictated it was time.
Jim had a lot of interests in life but the one he loved best was his love for old cars. One of his greatest wishes was to restore his 1963 Ford Falcon but sadly, his life was cut short. He loved to be outdoors, working in the yard or gardening, playing with his grandchildren, riding motorcycles, growing flowers, and just whatever he could find to do outside.
Jim dealt with a lot of health issues over his short time here. He hurt his back during his senior year in school and has dealt with pain for most of his adult life. He was diagnosed with Small Cell Lung Cancer in March of 2023 and fought a very hard, painful fight but lost the battle on Nov 7, 2023.
Jim is preceded in Death by his Mother, Deanna Edwards Sherman; his paternal grandparents, Roy, Ruth, and Margaret Sherman; his maternal grandparents, Larry Edwards and Ruth Edwards; Uncles Robert Edwards and David Edwards; Aunt Barbara Logan; Uncles Frank Sherman, Ted Sherman, Richard Sherman and Ivan Sherman; brother-in-law Dean Ahrens.
He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Janice Sherman; Daughter, Sarah Burch (Cody); Son, Lucas Sherman; Father, William G Sherman ;grandchildren, Kendra Burch and Owen Burch; Brother Jeff Sherman (Vanette); Sister, Mary Sherman-Ahrens; Brother Robert Sherman (Ruth); Brother Matthew Sherman (Holly); Nephews, Dustin Sherman (Michelle), Zach Ahrens, Billy Sherman (Ashley), Scot Novistski and Kyle Novitski; Nieces, Britany Sherman, Ruthie Ahrens, Hannah Ahrens, Danielle Kuschman (Ray), Desiree Lenz (Warren), Riley Sherman and Lexie Sherman, Three great-nephews and Five great nieces along with so many cousins and their families.
Jim was the kind of person that you wanted to be friends with. Anyone who crossed his path was blessed by him always. He always knew the right thing to say to everyone and told some truly awesome stories with the greatest sound effects ever. He made me laugh every day of our lives, even to the point of tears. He had a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and would talk to anyone about his faith. He was always there to help anyone who asked or was in need.
We, his family, are forever grateful that he was our person and the biggest presence in our family. He was the best part of me, our children, and his friends who loved him. Rest well my love, I will love you and miss you always, until we are reunited again. Peace and Love
In lieu of flowers, we would ask that you plant a tree in memory of James so he will live on and continue to make a presence in this world. Cards can be mailed to the Sherman Family, 265 S. Walnut St., Oologah, OK 74053
