Obituary published on Legacy.com by Heer Mortuaries & Crematory - Brush on Dec. 1, 2025.
James Lowell Spears was born in Eaton, Ohio on October 24, 1936, to Margaret Elnora Ridenour and George Kanada Spears. James often talked about his childhood in Ohio and Indiana. He shared stories of his maternal grandparents with whom he lived for a few years. While in high school, Jim worked at a bowling alley, setting pins. After he saved up some money he bought his grandmother a small TV. He would come home and see her watching wrestling matches. As soon as he opened the screen door his grandmother would get up and change the channel – no remotes in those days.
James was first married to Donna Rae for twenty-six years. Donna passed away in 1983. Together, James and Donna had two children, James Spears, now living in Oklahoma City, and Traci (Don) Root, now living in Colorado Springs. The family includes eight grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.
James then met and married Suzanna in 1985 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Suzanna brought to the family four sons, R. D. (Colorado), Fred (Colorado), Timothy (Colorado), and Henry (California). During their almost forty years of marriage the family grew to include ten more grandchildren and four more great grandchildren.
James was always dedicated to his country. As soon as he was able, he joined the United States Army. He served from 1954 to 1967. During that time, he received recognition and commendations including a purple heart with a silver cluster and the Army Commendation Medal in January of 1967. He treasured a personal note from his 1st Sgt. Norton:
"Just to let you know we didn't forget you and the outstanding work you did for us."
James was a Veteran of both the Korean War and the Viet Nam War. He was proud to attend the Honor flight of Northern Colorado as a Viet Nam Veteran. This trip allowed him to be honored for his service to his country.
After serving his country, James held several jobs in the Colorado Springs area. He eventually became a member of the United States Postal Service and continued as a Letter Carrier until he retired in 1998. During his years with the Postal Service, he was often recognized for his outstanding service. He cared for the residents he served in the area, often checking on them if mail wasn't picked up from their boxes.
One of his favorite stories was the time he was walking up a hilly driveway to deliver a package. He told us that this large yellow dog charged past him, almost knocking him off his feet. He delivered the package, walked back down the hill to his truck and continued his route. A few stops away there was a small gathering of residents. He got out of his truck and asked what was happening. One of the residents said, "You should have been here a little bit ago! A huge mountain lion came running through our yards." It was then that James realized it wasn't a dog that had rushed past him!
James had a rich life. He always thanked the Father for all those in his life. He loved all the little ones especially. He enjoyed watching them grow and become unique creatures of the Lord. He loved sharing stories, playing games, and enjoying family gatherings.
He enjoyed watching both the Rockies and the Broncos. I am sure he is putting a good word in for both teams as he enjoys his eternal life. He also enjoyed times in Cripple Creek and Black Hawk.
James is survived by his wife, Suzanna, his son and daughter and his four stepsons. He is also survived by the many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Each of those individuals will remember something special about James. Hopefully they will always remember that he did love each one and wished nothing but the best for each of them.
A Celebration of Life will be held December 19, 2025, at 1:00 PM at Heer Mortuary,
Brush, Colorado.
