James Staff Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Strike Life Tributes Funeral & Cremation Services - Isanti on Jan. 31, 2026.
James (Jim) Martin Staff, age 85, of Isanti, passed away on January 30, 2026, after a life defined by hard work, devotion to family, and quiet humor. A Remembrance Gathering will be held at the Isanti Community Center on Saturday, February 7, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Jim was born on August 11, 1940, in Fergus Falls, Minnesota, to William and Irene (Simonson) Staff. He was united in marriage to the love of his life, Patricia (Rieken) Staff, and together they shared 62 years of marriage, partnership, and unwavering commitment to family.

Jim worked as a Heavy Equipment Operator for 35 years, a career that reflected his unmatched work ethic and pride in a job well done. Known for his generous spirit and quick wit, Jim was someone people could always count on-whether for help, advice, or a laugh at just the right moment.

He found great joy in attending threshing shows and had a lifelong love of old engines and farm equipment. Often behind the camera, he served as the family's videographer, capturing moments big and small. In later years, he devoted countless hours to converting and archiving old family videos, a true labor of love meant to preserve family history. Along with his many interests, Jim was a playful prankster whose humor and timing kept those around him smiling.

Jim is survived by his beloved wife, Patricia (Patty) Staff; daughters, Tracy Lehn and Terry Kay; his favorite son-in-law, Jeff Lehn; four grandchildren, Josh Lehn, Taylor Lehn, Taryn Kay, and Tyler Kay; and three great-grandchildren, Henry, Penelope, and Leo Lehn. He is also survived by his brother, Les (Karen) Staff and nieces Tamara (Jamie) Brateng and Michelle (Michael) Hunter. Among those who will miss him dearly is his beloved pet, Björn, who held a special place in his heart.

He was preceded in death by his father, William Staff; his mother, Irene Staff; his stepfather, Charles Staff; and many aunts and uncles, including his special aunt, Dorothy Mae Lee.

Jim will be remembered not only for his generosity and dedication, but also for the personal touches that meant so much to his family-his written messages, poems, and beloved good-morning serenades. To his daughters, he was a constant source of love and guidance. Long before GPS, Jim was the family's MapQuest, always making sure his favorite girls got where they needed to go.

His legacy lives on in the many lives he touched and the family he loved so deeply.

Special thanks to the local EMTs and First Responders for their care and support over the past several years.
