James (Jim) R. Von Bergen, beloved son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on March 28, 2026 at the age of 67. Born on September 21, 1958, in
South Bend, Indiana, Jim was the cherished son of Robert and Sylvia Von Bergen. He graduated from Clay High School in 1977 and went on to build a life defined by hard work, skill, and deep devotion to those he loved. He was, at his core, unpretentious and happy in his own skin, a man comfortable with who he was and how he moved through the world.
In his younger years, Jim was an avid motocross rider, a pursuit that captured both his competitive spirit and his willingness to live a little on the edge. He was proud to have been an Indiana Amateur Champion, and like many who loved the sport, he carried the marks of it with him-having broken more than a few bones along the way. Jim was widely known through his work with Mobile Dent, where he earned a reputation as the very best in his field. No one came close. When another company couldn't remove a dent, Mobile Dent was the call. Jim often said there was nothing he liked better than a good hailstorm! He worked tirelessly, often seven days a week. Yet he would drop everything without hesitation when one of his children needed him.
A man of many passions, Jim was a lover of the natural world, happiest outdoors hunting, fishing, or spending time with his "toys" (cars and boats). His life was filled with both humor and action. A bit of a rogue in spirit, he was known to "battle" the turkeys on his property and once "slayed" one in the yard while still in his work clothes, only to quickly change into hunting gear for pictures. He was always ready to lend a hand, helping neighbors with snow removal and stepping in wherever he was needed, a friendly and steady presence in the lives of those around him.
After many years as a bachelor, Jim's life took a beautiful turn when he fell deeply in love with Paula. The two were married in 2005, creating a partnership rooted in care, laughter, and shared purpose. In recent years, Jim became an active supporter of Alzheimer's and Dementia Services of Northern Indiana, joining Paula in her passion to help caregivers. Whether a strong hand or his truck was needed, Jim showed up, filling sandbags, putting up signs around town, and offering steady, practical help. His willingness to help extended even to strangers; the boat he kept along the river was once used to rescue a high school chaperone and student who had fallen from a canoe during a field trip.
Jim fulfilled a lifelong dream when he purchased a 10-acre property along the St. Joseph River, where he made a house built in 1952 into his home. It was a place that suited him, where he used his many skills to transform it into a welcoming gathering place for friends and family. It became a location of celebration and connection, including hosting Paula's high school Class of 1972 for their 40th reunion.
He is survived by his loving wife, Paula Abraham; daughter Alicia (Charles) Alkire; son David (Emily) Hess; grandchildren Cory and Abraham Hess, and Rowan, Eliana, and Izabella Alkire; his mother, Sylvia; his sisters, Joan Kintzele and Jean (Glenn) Musial; sisters-in-law Janis (George) Logsdon and Mary (Greg) Albright; as well as many nieces and nephews who loved their Uncle Jim dearly.
He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Von Bergen, and brother-in-law Dave Kintzele. Paula would like to express her heartfelt gratitude to Alicia, whose loving care and steady presence over the past three and a half years supported both Jim and Paula in countless ways. Alicia's compassion and dedication brought comfort, dignity, and peace during a difficult time. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date. Palmer Funeral Homes – Welsheimer North Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Alzheimer's and Dementia Services of Northern Indiana, honoring Jim's commitment to helping others and caring for his community.
Jim's life was a gift to all who knew him. His love, laughter, strength, and generosity will be remembered always.
