James D. Young, 1940-2025, of Pittsburgh, passed away on Tuesday, January 28, 2025. Son of the late James F. and Olga B. (Dulak) Young. Predeceased by his remarkable and beloved wife of forty-seven years, Martha Jane (Lau) Young. Survived by daughters Laura (Kevin) Baverso, Linda (Craig) Mattie and Allison (Billy) Wilcosky along with six fantastic grandchildren: Cameron, Colin, Simon, Veronica, Finn and Hannah. Brother of Leonard G. (Diane) and two sisters, Micaela and Joan Marie (predeceased). Brother-in-law of Nancy Lee Jean (Lau) Kloos and David S. Lau. Jim served on active duty in the United States Army in the continental United States, West Germany and South Korea, as well as in the Army National Guard and the Army Reserve in military and civilian capacities for a combined total of forty-four years. Initially, he worked in NIKE air defense missile system support maintenance, and later in Army personnel and administration duties. Concurrent with Army Reserve full-time unit support assignments, he served in operations, mobilization and supervisory positions, mostly all of it within the grades of Chief Warrant Officer. In recognition of his multifaceted service, he was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal, several Army Commendation and Army Achievement Medals as well as two Army Superior (redesignated as Meritorious) Civilian Service Awards. Jim was blessed with a loving family which has included relatives and many excellent friends. He had life-long interests as diverse as railroads, model railroading, firearms and reading history, especially military history. He was also a great fan of bluegrass music and enjoyed watching the PBS New Year's Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra Special to ring in each New Year. Jim was never one to pass on a BBQ meal - which always brought a smile to his face.
