Jan Petersen, a devoted lover of the outdoors, a dedicated advocate of the law, an avid reader, and a cherished family man, passed away on May 15, 2023. He leaves behind a legacy of passion, integrity, and unwavering love that will forever be etched in the hearts of those who knew him. Born on January 12, 1949, to Leonard Petersen and Pauline (Illgen) Petersen, Jan's deep-rooted connection with nature began in his early years as he grew up on the North Shore. He found solace and inspiration amidst the mountains, rivers, and forests that surrounded his childhood home. Jan's love for the outdoors was an integral part of his being.
Tettegouche State Park, former property of the Illgen family, features a breathtaking cascade named in honor of his family. Illgen Falls stands as a living tribute to the Illgen family's legacy, a place where his loved ones and nature enthusiasts can find solace and inspiration.
Jan spent time in the Merchant Marine which later led to his love of sailing. After completing a course in San Francisco, he fulfilled his dream.
Jan's passion for justice and his unwavering commitment to upholding the law led him to pursue a career as a lawyer. With his sharp intellect, compassionate heart, and unyielding dedication, he fought tirelessly to ensure fairness and equality prevailed. He sought justice not only within the courtroom but also in the communities he served. Jan believed that the law was a powerful tool to shape a better society, and he inspired countless others to follow his lead.
Beyond his professional pursuits, Jan found great joy in the world of literature. He was an ardent reader, spending countless hours lost in the pages of books that transported him to different times and places. He appreciated the power of words and the infinite wisdom they held. Jan shared his love for reading with his family, encouraging them to explore the realms of imagination and knowledge. His personal library, filled with cherished volumes, will forever stand as a testament to his thirst for knowledge and his love for the written word.

Jan is preceded in death by his parents, Leonard and Pauline (Illgen) Petersen; sister Lenine Williams; brother Lance Petersen.
Jan is survived by his loving spouse Mary, children Alicia (Clair) Jelliff; Michele (Mark) Carroll, Janova (Tom) Lerdal; stepchildren Nikki (Mike) Reber; Katie Schiffler; grandchildren, Derek and Riley Wignall; Landyn Carroll; Kristen and Josh Allen, Cole and Matthew Jelliff; Andrew, Elizabeth and Evelyn Lerdal; Bella and Charlie Reber; Greta Albrecht, extended family, and friends.
