Obituary published on Legacy.com by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales, Inc. on Mar. 11, 2026.
Jan Lynette (Compton) Ross passed peacefully on March 10, 2026, at the Retirement Ranch in Clovis, NM. Jan was born in Portales, NM, on November 12, 1938, the only child of Eurith Paul ("E.P.") and Adele Compton. Jan graduated from Portales High School in 1956 and received her bachelor's and master's degrees in the field of education at ENMU. She began her life's work as a passionate, devoted, and exceptional elementary school teacher upon receiving her bachelor's degree. She taught for several years in various area communities, and in Oregon, briefly, prior to her 30 (plus) years at Sandia Elementary, in Clovis, serving as a beloved and highly respected First Grade Teacher. She also served as an exceptional mentor to others, throughout her career.

Among her many passions, Jan loved scrapbooking, shopping, traveling, and decorating. In one of her legacy scrapbooks, she wrote, "One evening in the Spring of 1953, G. C. Ross called Jan, requesting a date. It was the beginning of a beautiful friendship." She married G. C. Ross on December 22, 1957. Their enduring love and devotion to one another was an incredible love story and life-long adventure until his death in August of 2020.

Jan lived a life of Christian love and service to others. She attended Southside Church of Christ with her beloved husband in Portales, NM, for many years and she believed in and supported the New Mexico Christian Children's Home most of her life. Jan held several offices as a member of PEO, Chapter AY, for many years. She truly loved participating in the meetings, social gatherings, and philanthropic activities with her cherished PEO sisters.

Survivors include her son, Brent (P.J.) Ross of Highlands Ranch, CO, her daughter, Dana (Mike) Ware of Bovina, TX, grandsons Parker (Jamie) Ross of Darien, CT, and Garett (Karisa) Ross, of Lubbock, TX, step-grandsons Matthew (Rachel) Ware and Luke (Alex) Ware of Canyon, TX and John and Josh Jobe of Ceredo, WV, step-granddaughters, Anna (Caleb) Shepherd of Proctorville, OH and Andrea (Mark) Bammer of South Pointe, OH. Her great-grandchildren are Landon, Greyson, Logan and Isla Ross, and step great-grandchildren are Lincoln, Mason, and Madeline Gare Ware, All and Emma Shepherd, and Logan Blake, Kai and Harper Brammer.

She is also survived by a beloved sister-in-law, MayDell Daughrity of Portales, NM and nephews Varen (Mary) Daughrity of Portales, NM and Dyron (Sunde) Daughrity of Malibu, CA and family. Jan is survived by a beloved cousin, William Bennett Quade of Wilton Manors, FL and a niece, Anne (Richard) Thomas of Midland, TX and family. Jan was preceded in death by her parents, Eurith Paul Compton and Adele Compton Garten.

Heartfelt and immense gratitude goes to Christine Espinoza, her devoted caregiver and faithful companion as well as her beloved "sister-in-love," MayDell Daughrity. Grateful acknowledgement and appreciation go to the loving, patient, and diligent staff at the Retirement Ranch and PRMC Hospice.

Memorial Services will be held at a later date.
