Gardiner- On October 24, 2024, Jane Ann (Pease) Haskell, of
Gardiner, ME, passed away after a valiant 11 year battle with cancer. Jane was surrounded by her loving family as she ended her time here on Earth to begin her heavenly journey.
Jane was born in Rockland, ME, the daughter of Jesse Pease and Nancy (Hay) Pease. She attended and graduated from Rockland High School, Class of '78, and went on to receive an associate's degree in nursing from the University of Maine at Augusta. Jane received her Registered Nursing License from the State of Maine, where she practiced nursing for 37 years.
During her nursing training, she continued to live at home in Rockland with her mother, Nancy. She met her future husband, Christopher Haskell, at the Chuck Wagon Restaurant. The pair were destined to be together as he was the backbeat of the band the Country Travelers and she had the fastest dancing feet in the Mid-Coast. The two were married on June 5, 1982. By this time, they had moved to Blue Hill, ME where Jane was a nurse at Blue Hill Memorial Hospital. This is also where her son, Dustin, was born in August of 1984.
The three Haskell's uprooted to Hallowell, Maine, where Jane began working at Kennebec Valley Medical Center, later named Maine General Medical Center. Her second son, Sean, was born here in May of 1986. The now complete Haskell family made their final move to
Gardiner, ME where they established a loving home that was open to everyone, particularly the friends of the Haskell boys who called Jane "Mama Hask."
Jane cared deeply for her community, a virtue she instilled in both of her boys, and was a part of many community organizations; most notably the Gardiner Elks B.P.O.E #1293. As a member and Past Exalted Ruler, Jane helped establish a connection between the surrounding communities of Gardiner and the Club. Although there were several charitable acts completed in her time with the Elks, she invested the majority of her time and energy into support for the Maine Children's Cancer Program. This took on an even deeper meaning to her as she developed cancer herself.
Jane loved music and loved dancing. Even as she became unable to do so, Jane would venture to see live music whenever she could. When the bands she liked were not in town, she would gravitate to the jukebox or the karaoke machine to experience the music. It is this thread of song and dance that will forever bind her family and those who loved her most.
Jane is survived by her oldest son, Dustin, his wife Alyssa and their two children, Iris and Arlo, and her youngest son, Sean, his partner Keisha, and their child Flora. She is also survived by her partner of four years, Patrick Fitzmaurice. She was predeceased by her parents Jesse and Nancy and her husband Christopher. Jane leaves behind an immense number of friends, many of whom came to see her at the hospital in her final days; a testament to how much she was loved and how much love she gave.
There will be a celebration of life at the Gardiner Elks Club, on November 17, 2024, beginning at 2pm. A private burial will commence at a later date. Arrangements are under the care and guidance of Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Ave., Gardiner ME.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Maine Children's Cancer Program in Jane's name.
