Jane Steinway Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Arlington Memorial Gardens Funeral Home & Crematory on Mar. 19, 2026.
Jane Schwab Steinway, age 95, passed away at her home in Springfield Township on February 14, 2026. Born in Pittsburgh in 1930 to Elmer and Grace Schwab (née Fuchs), Jane and her family were some of the original residents of the Village of Greenhills when they moved to Cincinnati in 1938. They were also involved in the early days of the Greenhills Community Church Presbyterian, and Jane and her late husband, Jim, were lifelong members of the congregation. Jane is preceded in death by her husband, James (Jim) Steinway, and her brother, James Schwab. She is remembered and celebrated by her sons, Paul and Tod; her daughter-in- law, Sarah; her brother, Tom, and his wife, Helen; her sister-in-law, B.J.; and her grandchildren: Michael, Liz, Emily, Steven, and Tyler.

Jane graduated from Miami University in 1952 with a degree in early childhood education and spent her career teaching and tutoring children in elementary school. Her gifts as an educator could be seen in other areas of her life, especially in her role as a figure of care and connection not only within her family, but also in her relationships with the friends of her children and grandchildren.

Jane-known to many as "G"-was inquisitive, open, and engaged with the world around her. Her interests were varied and reflected her easygoing spirit and her pleasure in sharing simple joys with others. She loved working in her garden, baking and experimenting with new recipes, singing along to Chet Baker, playing Euchre and Hearts, watching K-dramas, spending her Kohl's cash, re-reading The Velveteen Rabbit, cheering on her Ohio teams ("Let's go boys!"), and sipping a cold Diet Coke on a hot summer day.

But it was not the "things" that G liked to do that made her into the magnetic figure that she was. Rather, it was the energy she created that drew people to her. Anyone who has spent time at the kitchen table on Wildbrook Lane knows that you don't need to be "doing" anything at G's to feel the sense of love and community that she had built through her unique talent for making anyone feel welcome in her home.

Jane's loving spirit lives on through all who knew her, and her passing is a reminder that life is most worth living when love is given and experienced in abundance.

In lieu of flowers, Jane's family invites you to make a donation to Matthew 25: Ministries or Cincinnati Children's Hospital.

An inurnment will take place at Arlington Memorial Gardens on March 20, 2026 at 12 noon. A memorial service will be held at Northminster church on March 21, 2026 at 11 AM.
