Janet Bailey, age 93, passed away peacefully on January 17, 2026, at Seasons of Life Hospice House in Woodruff, Wisconsin.

Janet was born on March 5, 1932, at Victory Memorial Hospital in Waukegan, Illinois, to Carl and Emma Hartmann. A proud graduate of Waukegan Township High School’s Class of 1949, she carried those hometown roots with her throughout her life. On September 2, 1950, she married the love of her life, John Robert “Bob” Bailey, beginning a partnership that spanned decades and built a strong, loving family. Bob, who served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War, preceded her in death, and their enduring bond remained a defining part of Janet’s life and our family’s history.

Janet was known for her vibrant spirit, quick wit, and unmistakable personality. In the 1950s, she proudly raced in Powder Puff Derby events at the Rockford Speedway and Waukegan Speedway—a reflection of her adventurous and independent nature. As a devoted Chicago Cubs fan, with wind in her hair, she would drive 50 miles down Sheridan Road to Wrigley Field in her 1972 Buick Skylark convertible—youngest child tucked away in a cardboard box in the back seat—just to cheer them on. She took equal pleasure in watching the Green Bay Packers regularly beat the Chicago Bears.

Janet found great joy in music, from the Saturday morning polka broadcasts on WXPR to the numerous concerts she attended over the years. Neil Diamond and Bob Seger held a special place in her heart.

Sharp-minded and curious, Janet was an avid jigsaw puzzler and crossword enthusiast—a passion that extended to her favorite TV shows. She rarely missed an episode of Jeopardy! or Wheel of Fortune, often blurting out the answers before the contestants did.

Janet embraced life on the Flambeau chain. She treasured pontoon boat rides whether for fishing, dinner at The Flame, or just soaking up the scenery. She loved the snow, the rhythm of the water, and was truly at peace in the Northwoods. And, let’s not forget her regular visits to the Lake of the Torches Casino and the kind words she always had for the staff, including Arnold and Michael.

Family was the center of Janet’s world. She was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Emma Hartmann; her brother, Don Hartmann; her sister, Marilyn Fiddyment; and her beloved sons, Bill and Greg.

She leaves behind her sons, Robert and his spouse Carol; Bruce and his spouse Cheryl; and Mike and his former spouse Wendy. Janet’s legacy continues through her six grandchildren—Michael Zahn, Margaret Shores (née Zahn), Trevor Bailey, Logan Bailey, Tanner Bailey, and Nick Bailey—and her three great-grandchildren, Autumn Shores, Nathan Shores, and Maverick Zahn, all of whom brought her immense pride and joy.

Janet will be remembered for her warmth, her sharp mind, her love of music and sports, and the joyful, spirited way she embraced life. She leaves behind a family rich in memories and a life well lived.

We miss you mom.
