Janet Irene Barkes, 86, of Seymour, passed away on June 27, 2025, at her home. Born on March 3, 1939, in Seymour, she was the daughter of the late Delbert and Lorene Myers.

Janet was a homemaker and loved her hometown. She was active in AA, serving as a mentor for many years. She enjoyed skating, dancing, gardening, and shopping. Janet was hardworking and known for her tenacity. She rarely met a stranger, thanks to her sweet smile and friendliness.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Delbert Dennis Myers; and a grandson, Alex Barkes.

Janet is survived by her children, Curt (Carol) Barkes of Columbus and Catherine Bowie of Indianapolis; three grandchildren, Cara (John) Foyles, Clayton Bowie, and Jackie (Charlie) Mattox; three great-grandchildren, Christian and Jenna Foyles, and Elise Mattox; and one sister, Sue Ellen Williams of Land O' Lakes, FL. She also leaves behind other family members and many friends, all of whom will miss her greatly.

Memorial contributions may be made to Girls Inc. of Jackson County.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00am on Monday, July 7, 2025 at the Burkholder Chapel of Thorne-George Family Funeral Homes, 419 North Chestnut Street, Seymour, Indiana, with Pastor Joel Burbrink officiating. Burial will immediately follow at Riverview Cemetery in Seymour. Visitation will also be held Monday at Burkholder Chapel, from 10 a.m. until the service hour at 11am.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Scotty Wessel and Jon Pace at Burkholder Chapel in Seymour.
