Houlton, Maine – Mrs. Janet (Vanaria) Bourque of Houlton, formerly of Waltham, died Monday, December 20, 2021 at her home. She was 69. Janet was born on January 17, 1952, the daughter of the late Felix and Gloria (Gatturna) Vanaria. She was raised in Waltham and graduated from Saint Mary's High School in 1970. After that she earned her nursing degree at Salem State College School of Nursing and became a registered nurse. During her thirty-four year career she worked at various hospital and nursing homes. On March 4, 2007 she married Michael Bourque at Sacred Heart Church in Waltham. The two spent many years in Waltham before moving to Maine a few years ago. Janet was a caring and loving wife and mother, guided by her faith. A devout Catholic, she had a strong prayer life and was active in church ministry. Janet was also a natural and gifted artist. She was always humble about her talent when others often complimented her. Her talent came in the form of drawing and knitting. She drew portraits and things that reminded her of God's beauty. Focusing on drawing beautiful things kept her positive and lifted her spirit. In addition to her husband Michael, she leaves her son, Matthew Farnham of Pelham, New Hampshire; her brother, Philip Vanaria of Linneus, Maine; her aunts, Alice, Betty, Mary and Anna, her uncle John and many dear cousins, nieces, nephews and their families. Family and friends will honor and remember Janet's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Wednesday, December 29th from 4 to 7 p.m. and again at 9 a.m. on Thursday morning before leaving in procession to Saint Mary's Church, 133 School Street, Waltham where her Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery, Waltham.

Michael, both Jeffrey and myself just received word now of your recent loss. We offer up our condolences you and your family. We remember Janet as a beautiful Holy Spirit filled believer who always found joy in everything that she did for the Lord especially when she was learning how to play Piano and wanted to show all of us at Annie's place during a prayer gathering how the Holy Spirit instructed her to play that would be the easiest for her. I believe it was through colors. Know that we are continually in our thoughts and prayers. In His Love, Shirley and Jeffrey Canniff ❤

Janet was one of the kindest and generous people I have ever known. I'm honored to have had the opportunity to call this beautiful soul Ma. She had a way of making everyone feel so loved. She cared for me as her own daughter and did so much for my niece, who she never had the opportunity to meet in person. I will forever miss her.

My cousin Janet was always a beautiful person. My earliest memory of her was when we were both about 4 years old. Her Dad dropped her off at my house - I think Auntie might have been in the hospital. That was when I first heard the words big job - I had no idea what she was talking about ! I had to share my beloved rocking horse with her, and I wasn't very good at sharing - I was a brat, but my cousin liked me anyway! Later on, when we were in grade school, I stayed at her house - a vacation for me, and I remember she liked to draw fashion clothes, and wanted to be a fashion designer. As a teenager she was very pretty, with her own unique bohemian-type style, different, but in a very nice way. But my best memory of her was when we were both 17 years old. I was visiting the Waltham relatives with my Dad, and Janet and I decided to walk downtown. Suddenly, a car load of Janet's friends stopped and invited us to join them. We hopped in the car, and went to the cinema in ? Cambridge, ? Boston - I have no idea where, because I'm from Acton ! But I remember we saw the 1969 film Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice, rated R - no one under 17 admitted. Well, we were both 17 except my Dad who followed all the movie ratings, didn't allow me to see any movie not rated G - general admittance! Now I had to come up with a lie for the movie we had just seen! And I had a lie on the tip of my tongue, but Dad didn't ask about the movie. He assumed that because I was with Janet who attended Catholic School, his alma mater, that we had not seen anything other than a G rated movie, and never questioned me! I will never forget you, my dearest darling cousin. I know you are at peace and resting with the angels. Love you always!

Matthew, memories of your Mom are spinning in my mind, I am unable to reconcile the years I lost with her. She was a beautiful person not only in appearance but in her soul. She had such depth and we would often sit and talk about love, life, illness and of course Vietnam because we first met in 1970. She felt the pain and suffering of others despite her youth and quietly carried that inside her. I am glad that her faith brought her comfort these many years and I am certain God watched over her this past year and helped to ease her suffering.
Her classmates from Salem Hospital School of Nursing are comforting each other with wonderful memories of your Mom, a beautiful soul who was taken from this life too soon.
With love and sympathy

I will always treasure the moments I had with Janet. So full of love and peace, she was always a joy to be with. We used to joke about exchanging an Irish hug at the sign of peace. Janet always gave me hope and in her death she continues to do so. Much peace to Mike and the family

Janet was surely "God's Gift" to me! We shared so many precious God moments together. I could never share all of them. I could go on + on + on sharing the "Tapestry of God's Love" we shared as a married couple. She left me with her very profound example of a deep union with The Good Lord, always right down to the smallest details. I saw this continually in her life. She lived out her faith wonderfully.

I will Always Love you Janet! See you soon! (By The Grace of God of course as we both would say). Luv Ya Honey!

I am so sorry for your loss. Loved "I'm not dying, I'm being born into eternal life"! That is the message of the bible. Be at peace and hold onto that. Jesus is Lord, PTL now and forever! You will be together again.

Janet was a true Christian who mastered loving others praying with wisdom for the best in all. I loved her deeply and pray for her family members and Michael her husband on this earth to be strengthened in her example for us all.

I am very sorry about Janet's passing. I know my brother Michael had a beautiful relationship with her, so I am glad for the time he had with her in this life. Let us all be faithful to God so that we can be together throughout eternity where there will be no death, sorrow, or crying, but only joy, and that continually.
