Janet Lee Cappello, 76, of West Chester, PA, passed away February 26, 2026.
Born November 26, 1949 in Dover, DE, she was the daughter of the late Harold Carlisle and Sarah Catherine (nee Willis) Austin.
Janet was known for her strength, determination, and deep devotion to her family. From a young age she showed a competitive spirit, excelling in school and sports, taking pride in having served as quarterback of her girl’s football team.
Later in life, Janet discovered a passion for karate. Through years of discipline and perseverance, she earned both her black belt and second-degree black belt in a male-dominated sport. She went on to become a respected Sensei and opened her own karate school, where she mentored students and taught the values of confidence, discipline, and resilience.
Above all, Janet was a devoted mother and grandmother whose greatest pride and joy was her family, especially her six grandchildren. Janet also had a special place in her heart for animals and welcomed rescued Keeshonds into her home.
Janet was the loving mother of Gary Cappello (Danielle) of Mechanicsburg, PA, Mark Cappello (Melody) of Oswego, NY, and James Cappello (Amy) of West Chester, PA; proud grandmother of Alex, James, Aidan, Violet, Logan, and Morgan Cappello; dear sister of the late William Jameson Vanderbilt of West Palm Beach, FL; and niece of her very dear aunt Betty Willis and the late William "Bill" Willis, who were treasured members of her family.
Relatives and friends are invited to her Visitation from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM, Sunday, March 15, 2026 at The Donohue Funeral Home, 1627 West Chester Pike, West Chester, PA 19382.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Brandywine Valley SPCA, 1212 Phoenixville Pike, West Chester, PA 19380. (https://bvspca.org)
