Janet Rose Godfrey, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away peacefully in her home, surrounded by her family, in Broomfield, Colorado on Friday, May 9th, 2025 after a short illness.
On June 1st, 1930, Janet was born to Leo and Birdie Swanger in Sioux City, Iowa. Losing both of her parents as a child, she was raised by her grandparents, Ward and Emily Swanger in Lawton, Iowa. She is survived by her husband, Dale Godfrey of Broomfield, CO; children, Mark Godfrey of Isabela, Puerto Rico and Lynn Dalton of Arvada, CO; granddaughters, Andrea Hanna of York, PA and Jessica Hanna of Arvada, CO; and great-granddaughters, Taylor Hanna of Denver, CO and Isabela Hanna of Arvada, CO.
She graduated valedictorian at Lawton High School in 1948. It was there that she cultivated friendships that would last her lifetime. She loved dogs, was a wonderful cook, and a master seamstress. She also enjoyed reading and crossword puzzles. Her favorite movie was The Wizard of Oz.
In 1948, Janet met the love of her life, Dale Godfrey, and they were married on March 25, 1949 in Sioux City, Iowa. They were both very active in their community and were members of Grace United Methodist Church and Morningside Country Club in Sioux City, and Wheat Ridge United Methodist Church in Colorado. Some of their favorite activities were dancing, bowling, and playing golf. In 1973 they moved to Colorado where they enjoyed camping and fishing in the Rocky Mountains. They celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary on March 25th, 2024 and received a card from the President of the United States and First Lady congratulating them on that milestone.
Janet was a kind and generous person in every sense and always put others before herself. Her family was the most important thing to her. She donated to many charities throughout her life, but had a special place in her heart for Native Americans. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Joseph's Indian School, a direct link to donate can be found below (PO Box 326, Chamberlain, SD 57326).
Janet was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, and son-in-law, Steve Dalton.
