Janet Goyer Obituary
Janet Goyer, 98, entered into eternal life on Saturday, October 25, 2025.
Janet was born in Marion, Ohio on October 5,1927, the daughter of Paul and Goldie (Lenon) Hochstetter. When she was 3, her family moved to Moline, Ohio, and there she soon found her love of music. Janet first sang at church when she was 5, and she began playing piano for the Sunday School at age 12.
Janet graduated from Lake High School in 1945. During her time there, she accompanied ensembles and programs on the piano. Upon graduation, she went to North Central College in Naperville, Illinois for two years where she studied piano, organ, and vocal performance. She was able to earn money for voice lessons by accompanying other vocal students.
At a young age, Janet placed her faith in Jesus Christ and committed to follow Him. She has admitted that she was afraid that God would direct her to a foreign mission field, but felt certain that she was being called to be a mother, so her mission became that of being the best mother she could be. In 1948, she married the late Vernon Goyer of Marion, and moved back to his family's farm in Richland township. The couple had 3 children, and Janet began her mission of becoming the best mother she could be. At that time, they didn't have many conveniences and she did laundry on a machine with rollers and hung the clothes outside to dry. She learned to sew and had an endless repertoire of casseroles that she made. She loved reading to her children, taking them to the park, and most importantly sharing Jesus with them. During those years and for the rest of her life, music remained a passion.
Janet attended Calvary EUB Church where she played piano, and for some time was the organist there. They transferred to Smeltzer Road Alliance Church (which later became Cornerstone Alliance) in 1970 and she continued as the pianist there until she was 80. During that time, she played or sang for a great number of weddings, funerals, Church programs, etc. In 1968, she began teaching piano lessons in her home. For 25 years she taught a countless number of students, some of whom went on to have successful music careers of their own.
Janet was a gentle, gracious lady and she loved order and simplicity in her life. She was a reader, puzzler, and Scrabble player, she enjoyed creating hand-made cards and sending them to her extended family, always with a personal message.
Janet is survived by her son Tim (Vickie) Goyer of Moline, OH and daughter Jana (Mike) Ziegler of Marion, OH as well as 8 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
Preceding her in death was her husband of 65 years, Vernon Goyer, a son, Rex Goyer, her parents, and a brother and sister.
The family would like to thank Tranquility Hospice for their compassion and care.
Visitation will be Monday, November 3, 2025 at Cornerstone Alliance Church, 2010 Marion-Marysville Rd., Marion, OH 43302 from 10am to 12Noon. Funeral service will immediately follow at 12Noon; burial will be in Chapel Heights Memory Gardens in Marion.
