Janet P. Kuney

Janet Payne Kuney, 75, of Hartsdale, NY, passed away suddenly on Sunday, November 27th. Janet was born on January 9, 1947, to Douglass and Jean Payne in Ithaca, NY. After graduating from Ithaca High School in 1964, she enrolled at Cornell University, where she met Kelby Kuney of Seneca Falls, NY. Janet and Kelby were married in 1966, and moved to Seneca Falls, where they raised two children, Timothy and Kathleen.
Janet and Kelby started Springbrook Grain Co. in the late 1970s in the basement of their Canoga, NY home. The business started buying grain from the local farmers, but eventually became one of the most important independent commodity brokers in the Northeast. Janet was particularly skilled in finance, and she was instrumental in adopting computer systems for the business - revolutionary for the era. Janet and Kelby eventually divorced, and Janet moved to Hartsdale, NY in 1986 to work with her sister, Peggy Payne. Together, Janet and Peggy built Playground Medic, a company that evaluates, builds, and repairs playgrounds for countless communities in the tri-state region and beyond.
Throughout her life, Janet was active in her local Rotary Club - both in Seneca Falls and Hartsdale. She held various roles, including President, and served as Treasurer of the Hartsdale-Greenburgh Rotary Club at the time of her passing. Her biggest source of joy was helping others, and she will always be remembered for her kindness and generosity.
Janet is survived by her sister, Peggy Payne, and brothers Robert and Monroe Payne. She also leaves behind her children Timothy Kuney, Kathleen Murdock, and their respective families.
Calling hours will be held on Saturday, December 3rd from 2-4PM, at McMahon Funeral Home in White Plains, NY. A service will be held at 4PM, with a reception directly to follow.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Hartsdale-Greenburgh Rotary Club. Janet was deeply committed to the club's project combating food insecurity, and all contributions made in her name will be applied to this cause.
