New Orleans, Louisiana - Janet Elliott Niemeyer danced into heaven on July 28, 2025 at the age of 88 with her children holding her hands. Funeral service will be held August 15, 2025 at Christ Church, Bay St. Louis, MS. Born Janet Louise Elliott on June 29, 1937 in East St. Louis, Illinois, she was the daughter of Donald Henry Elliott and Faye Marie Burton Elliott. Jan graduated as valedictorian from East St. Louis High School, but was not permitted to deliver the address because she was a woman. After graduating from University of Wisconsin, Jan taught English at Belleville Township High School, Belleville Township Junior College, River Oaks Academy in Louisiana, and College of the Mainland in Texas until just shy of her 80th birthday taking time away from teaching to raise her children and help run the family printing business. Jan welcomed unexpected guests at family dinner with the warm expression, "There's always room for another pair of shoes under our table." Raising and caring for her horses satisfied Jan's childhood dreams and gave her peace. Jan, a devoted Christian, is preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Donald Elliott. Jan is survived by her sisters, Dorothy Needles of St. Louis and Linda Eader (Randy) of League City; her children, Kirk and Scott Niemeyer of New Orleans, and Susan Gelpi (Gus) of Bay St. Louis; and grandchildren, Olivia, Isabelle, Marguerite, and Julia Gelpi and Mattia Richardson.

Jan and I were roommates our senior year of college. We lived in the Chi Omega house at Univ of Wis. She was a considerate roommate, classy, smart and so much fun. Very proud of her older brother and so fond of her little sisters. I moved out a bit before graduation because my internship started early. Thus, we never had a proper goodbye. She´s listed only by maiden name in the Nu chapter and national directories. We both moved on. Very occasionally I would try to find her. Never did. For some unknown reason to me on 8/12/25 I typed in Janet Elliott and up popped her obituary. So happy to find her and so sad to find her too late. She must have had a wonderful life. Three kids and a rewarding teaching career. I didn´t know she was fond of horses. I live in Fitchburg which is a small city next to Madison WI. I have happy memories of our time as ChiOs. The Elliott´s lived across the street from us, when I was going up. I was friends with her sister Linda. I always admired her when I was growing up. She was beautiful lady inside and out...have many memories from the Elliott home. You have my deepest sympathy.
