Janice J. Caldwell

On September 23, 2025, Janice J. Caldwell peacefully went home to be with God. She was born on July 2, 1935 in Lock Haven, PA to her parents, Carroll and Helen Johnson. Janice attended Kindergarten at the Lock Haven State Teacher’s College Kindergarten Program in The Campus School. She spent her elementary grades in the Dunnstown Elementary School, followed by Junior High and Senior High in the Lock Haven School District graduating in 1953. She received her B.S. Degree in Elementary Education in 1957. She taught 3 years in PA followed by 38 years in Lake Forest East Elementary School, retiring after 41 total years of teaching from 1957 to 1998.

Janice and her late husband, Richard Caldwell, were members of the First Presbyterian Church of Milford and both sang in the church choir. She also directed the Handbell Choir for several years. She has always loved and had music in her life. One love was Barbershop Harmony, she sang with the Milford Harmonette Chorus, and was the bass in the Bayside 4 Barbershop Quartet.

She was a proud member of the Bayhealth Sussex Campus Auxiliary, helping to chair The Hospital Fair years ago, and being on several fundraising project committees. Being from Lock Haven, home of the Piper Cub, Janice always enjoyed airplanes. She and her husband, Dick, volunteered at the Air Mobility Command Museum at the Dover Air Base. Janice was the Volunteer Coordinator at the Museum for 21 years. She always enjoyed watching the big C-5 do “touch and goes”.

She truly appreciated and loved family and friends. She and Dick returned to high school and college reunions frequently. They also attended a luncheon in Harrisburg, PA twice a year with a group of about 50 PennDel Group of Lock Haven Teacher Grads who taught in these two states. She always said, “It was good to keep in touch with so many friends”.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Dick Caldwell, parents, Carroll and Helen Johnson, her sister, Dolores (Ross) Thomas and her step-father, Robert Kniss. Janice is survived by a niece, several nephews, great nieces and nephews, great-great nieces and nephews, and a great-great-great niece.

A special thank you to Judy and Garry Grier, Linda Irwin, Karen Roberts, Judy Caldwell, John Bechtold, Mike Moyer and the many aides for all of their cares and concerns of Janice in her recent months.

Services will be held in The First Presbyterian Church, 101 S. Walnut Street, Milford, DE 19963 on Monday, September 29, 2025 with visitation from 10:00 – 11:30 and Memorial Service immediately following. Interment will be at Milford Community Cemetery.
