The Life & Legacy

Janice Kaye Brown DeJohnette

Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good. Romans 12:21

Janice Kaye Brown DeJohnette was born on July 1, 1957, to the late Walter M. and Mary L. Paul Brown in Morrow, LA. She departed her earthly home on Saturday, August 23, 2025.

Janice received her elementary education and her secondary education in Simmesport, LA. Following high school graduation at the age of 15, she matriculated at Northeast University in Monroe, LA and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Medical Technology at the age of 19 years old. She went on and obtained a master's degree. She worked as a Medical Technologist at UTMB in Galveston, TX and was the Product Service Manager in the blood bank. After 30 years of service, she retired in that capacity. She was an active and lifetime member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated, where she held many offices and sat on many committees.

Janice accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Greater New Bethel Baptist Church in Simmesport, LA. After marriage, she became a faithful member of Live Oak Baptist Church in Galveston, TX, now under the auspices of Pastor Vernon Baines. As a member, she served as Youth Coordinator of the Children Ministry, lead Vacation Bible School Teacher, teacher for Little House, and member of the Hospitality Kitchen Ministry. She was a faithful and devoted member for 45 years until our heavenly Father called her home.

On April 14, 1979, she was united in marriage to Alcides DeJohnette. They were married for 46 years. She was a faithful wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She enjoyed spending time with her grandkids (a.k.a. T-Grammy - the apples of her eyes). She was kind and compassionate and believed in helping anybody. Her motto was "When You Know Better – You Do Better." Her favorite scripture, "Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good." Romans 12:21.

Janice leaves to cherish her memory: one son, Bryan Joseph DeJohnette (fiancé LaKeiya); one daughter, Kayla Louise Montgomery (Dallas) of La Marque, Texas; two bonus sons, Tony Little (Tasha) and Frankie Green; four grandchildren: Anaya, Ryan, Dallas (Deuce), and Alcide that kept her young. One sister, Linda F. LaCour (Donald) of Dallas, TX; two brothers, Myron K. Brown (Wanda) of Simmesport, LA; and Robert A. Brown (Annie Mae) of Houston, TX; two nieces Deniqua Hill (Chris) of Dallas, TX; and Brandi Brown of Houston, TX; one nephew Jarrod O. Brown of Simmesport, LA. Two brothers-in-law, Dennis Miller (Eva); and Stanley Murray; four sisters-in-law, Regina Goode (Paul); Ann Carey (Michael); Brenda Robinson (Donald); and Linda Murray; three Godchildren, other nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

We thank God for the life of Janice, for all the lives that she has touched and the memories that she has left. We pray that God will comfort our family, her friends, and her church family as we prepare to move forward without her beautiful presence.

She was preceded in death by her father, mother, aunts, uncles, nephew, cousins, many church members, and friends.
