Janice Viau Obituary

Janice N. Viau, 59, of Jamesville, passed away peacefully on September 19, 2025. Janice was born on March 24, 1966. She is a graduate of Jamesville-DeWitt High School, and St. Joseph's Hospital College of Nursing.
Jan worked as a Registered Nurse in oncology at St. Joseph's hospital for 38 years. Jan was noted for her kind spirit and generosity as well as her compassion. Through her career, Jan helped to train, teach, and mentor many of the nursing staff at St. Joe's. Her colleagues and friends at the hospital frequently noted in the last weeks of her life how much they learned from Jan through the years, especially noting many of the "old tricks" of the trade. Jan recently received the Daisy Award at St. Joseph's Hospital; an award celebrating extraordinary clinical skill and compassionate nursing care.
In the final weeks of her life, Jan received a tremendous outpouring of love from her work family, and other staff members at St. Joe's where she transitioned from nurse to patient. While a patient on the oncology floor where she formally served, Jan was able to become the first person ever baptized at St. Joseph's Hospital. Also, during this time, Jan was able to experience the Nurse's Honor Guard ceremony, where her career was celebrated with dozens of family, friends, and colleagues, and where she was officially relieved of her nursing duties.
Jan was predeceased by her parents, Ronald and Jane Norman Viau of Jamesville. She is survived by two sisters, Judi (David), and Joanie Fleet (Chris). Jan is also survived by three nephews and one niece, Benjamin, Lily, Owen, and Hayden.
Donations in Jan's name and memory can be made to St. Joseph's College of Nursing.
