Jason Oswald Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 19, 2001.
New York, His Second City
Jason Douglas Oswald had moved to New York only in June. But he and the woman he was seeing, Nancy Prentis, also a fresh arrival from the Midwest, were already consummate New Yorkers.

They ran at dusk in Central Park. They frequented the public tennis courts beneath the George Washington Bridge.

And they spent hours moving the broken- in Ford Explorer he had brought from Chicago, just to keep up with maddening parking rules. Apparently, said Jane Oswald, Mr. Oswald's mother, "you can't have a job and a car in New York because you have to keep going to move your car."

Her 28-year-old son was not thinking that far ahead in June when he quit his job in Chicago and drove east, ending up in Manhattan. All he knew was that he wanted to be with Ms. Prentis. The job would come later, he told his mother from somewhere on the Pennsylvania Turnpike. When he finally landed an accounting job in August at Cantor Fitzgerald, on the 101st floor of 1 World Trade Center, the Explorer was parked at a friend's home.

The S.U.V. got some exercise before Labor Day, when Mr. Oswald took Ms. Prentis to Merrill, Wis., to meet his parents. After Mr. Oswald's disappearance on Sept. 11, Ms. Prentis and her parents made the trip one last time from the big city to attend memorial services for Mr. Oswald and return the Explorer.

I worked with Jason at PwC Chicago from 1998 to 2000. He was such a nice, considerate, friendly guy. I think of him every September. He made the world better than he found it.

I will always remember. Jason's memory brought 9/11 to the people in our area. I hold Jane in my heart.

I remember Jason and his sister from our days on the youth swim team. I was 10 years old and Jason was 1 or 2 years older. He was always kind and was a hard worker even at that young age. Jason and Jennifer were welcoming and friendly to all. Many summer days I can remember riding my bike with my brother to Jason's house and playing video games or swimming.

Jason's parents were also friendly to all the kids and parents in the neighborhood. We attended different high schools but both went to the University of Texas and ran in to each other a few times in Austin. Although we lost touch, I always looked up to Jason. I saw him as focused, no nonsense, and honest. He also was kind and warm-hearted to people he did and didn't know.

I hope his family is doing well and the memories they have of Jason bring smiles to their faces. I am sure they think of the life he lived for 28 years and all the good things he did during that time. His last tragic day had nothing to do with him. I much prefer the memory of him on the swim team when we were kids.

Best wishes to the Oswalds.

I grew up with Jason in The Woodlands and we ended up going to our Senior Prom together as friends. He was such a smart, kind, and generous person. I remember being in classes with him and looking back now realizing he was very witty for his age. I have wonderful and fond memories of this sweet boy. I think of Jason on this day and his birthday every year as it's one day after mine. I will never forget the friendship that we shared. May God give him eternal rest and the Oswald family the strength to bear this great pain.

I grew up in The Woodlands, TX with Jason. I learned of Jason's death shortly after 9-11. My memories of him are filled with images of his smile and acts of kindness. Jason embodied the characteristics that Christ would want each of us to show each other. When I think of the tragedy of 9-11--I know that Jason's life is one example of the tremendous loss that happened that day. All the family and friends of everyone who lost someone have suffered much sorrow. Please know that we all remember and your loved ones are NOT forgotten.
Much love to the Oswald family.

I knew Jason. We started at PW in Chicago in 97. Sweet, thoughtful, caring, smart, curious..are just a few of a thousand words to describe Jason. One evening we shared a few beers on my rooftop deck ...soaking in the city and the life ahead of us. He was special and will always be remembered.

I will never forget being in NYC in October of 2001 and scanning the names of the missing that had been posted on the wall of a subway station. Jason's name jumped off the page and I couldn't bring myself to believe it was THAT Jason whom I had grown up with. Even now after 14 years, I still have a hard time believing it.
I don't believe that time heals wounds, but I do believe that Christ does. I pray His peace that passes all understanding for the Oswald family and for all families for whom this day serves as a memorial to a lost loved one.

I discovered today that Jason was in the WTC on 9/11. Jason was one of the sweetest guys I have ever met. He and I worked together at Camp Good News, along with our siblings, Glenn & Jennifer. He had a great smile, & was so very kind. It wasn't long ago that I was telling my own children about Jason, & his parrot, Chester. I have fond memories of Jason. My heart goes out to his family, for their loss.

I wanted to let Jason's family know how much of an impression he left on even those that only knew him for a short time. I worked with Jason many years ago when he was at PwC in Chicago. Although I didn't know him very long, he left quite the impression on me and others. We remember him for both his genuine kindness as well as his great intellect. It was truly a joy to work with him. I was deeply saddened when I learned almost 10 years ago that he was in the WTC that day. I think of him every year since and wanted you to know that he really had an impact, even on those of us that didn't know him very long.

On this 10th anniversary, my thoughts and prayers focused on remembering Jason. I met him in Chicago after college at Holy Trinity Church. I got to know him through mutual friends and smile when thinking of the good times we all had together when hanging out. He was such a great natured guy, genuine, very kind and considerate. My prayers continue to go to his family and friends as we all continue to miss his presence hear on earth. How encouraging to know that He is rejoicing with God in heaven now that his faith has become sight!

Each time I think about that tragic day I also think about things from youth sports to discussions we had in Spanish class when I sat in front of Jason. Jason was a smart guy. We weren't in contact after we all went our seperate ways after high school graduaion, but I was amazed at what I learned he had accomplished after high school. Perhaps I shouldn't have been though, given that he was a sharp guy. I know many of us who grew up with Jason in The Woodlands, TX will always remember him because he was always well-liked and respected.

To Jason's friends and family --

I find myself thinking of Jason often. He was my younger brother Greg's age (aka "Toast") and they played on soccer teams together in grade school. I never really knew Jason well, but he was always such a nice guy -- I liked what I knew of him.

Unfortunately, I lost my brother last year, and I now often think of these two young men together, both lost far, far too soon. I know that words on a page can't fix anything, but knowing that others think of, and care about my brother has given me some feeling of warmth. I hope to pass that to you, knowing that your son, your nephew, your friend, your cousin, your beloved Jason is remembered often and fondly.

Three years ago today you were taken from us and I think of you often. Each year, I have tried to continue your legacy by telling my students about the man you were, how you lived your life, and how you impacted everyone you met. I still miss your quiet strength, your timely humor, and your wise counsel. There is so much I wish I could share with you today. My thoughts go out to your family on this difficult day. Thank you for the privilege of your friendship and for providing such an example. Love, Alissa

It was just this past spring that I learned of the tragic loss of Jason. My son, Jeff, told me he had just seen his name.

We knew Jason many, many years ago. He and Jeff were in elementary school together in Spring, Tx. I also drove car pool to swim practice with Jason, his sister, and our youngest, Joshua. We have some very warm memories even though our families had not been in contact since 1984.

On this the 2nd anniversary of this tragedy, my thoughts and prayers are with the you.

When Jason worked for PwC, he came to our bank in Des Moines. Jason was the same age as my youngest son. I'm glad I got to know Jason somewhat while he was here working at the bank.

When I found out about "Mercy Bands" being made with victims names on them, I knew I wanted one with Jason's name on it. I'm still wearing my "Band" every day. I continue to pray for Jason, his family and all those that lost their lives, and I continue to wear it as a reminder to never take life and our freedoms for granted. God bless you Jason.

Jason, I am eternally grateful that you were such an important part of Alissa's life, you were a kind and faithful friend to her as well as an example of a life that truly mirrored our Savior, Jesus Christ. It is the hope that we have in Jesus that gives us the hope that someday we will all see you again in Glory. Although I have never been one to wear a watch, please know that I wear a Mercy Band ( From the Calvary Chapel in Albuquerque) with your name on it - I wear it to remember you, and you are worth honoring in this way, to remember to pray for your parents and family, and in hopes of being able to witness to anyone who asks about the bacelet, to tell them about you, about your life, about our shared hope in Christ, and about how they can accept their own gift of Salvation by accepting Jesus Christ as their Savior. My life is richer for having known you, Jason. Until we see you again, and with love, Mrs. Fehr

Jason,

Even though I didn't know you that well in high school, I'll always remember you as someone who had a smile on his face. In fact, I don't think I ever saw you without one. You had a quietness and calmness about you that really made people feel at ease. You and I never discussed "faith" issues, but from what I hear you do know the Lord. The one year anniversary is coming up and will light a candle in memory of you. There is no need to pray for you, because you are with Christ and those who have gone before us. I will pray for your family that was left behind. Peace, my friend. I look forward to seeing your smile again when I see Jesus welcoming me.

Greg Lawson

We are very sorry for your loss of Jason. May all of you feel Jaosn's warmth and love surround you. Our hearts cry with you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn

Nancy and Jason were both in my prayers September 11th. I have known Nancy for about 5 years and just missed the opportunity to meet Jason on their road trip to Wisconsin when they traveled trough Cleveland (my former residence). From everything Nancy, Nancy's family, and her other friends have told me about Jason, he was a tremendous person and will be sadly missed.
