Jasper Pont Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 20, 2019.
Jasper Bentley Pont, 21, a free spirit and deeply loved soul, died on Tuesday, January 22, 2019 in Boulder, Colorado. His death was unexpected; the disease of addiction took his life at too early an age.

Jasper was born on June 23, 1997 in Bend, Oregon, and lived in Boulder, Colorado. Jasper attended University Hill Bilingual Elementary, Centennial Middle, and graduated from Boulder High School in 2015.

Jasper's legacy is a beautiful one: he was passionate and cared deeply for people and animals, especially those he felt were cast-aside or disadvantaged. He could see light and beauty in darkness, and shared his heart and his infectious humor willingly and completely. He could and would talk to anyone, and when you were in his company you wanted to remain with him. Being in Jasper's attention, or the subject of his next prank, was a gift.

Jasper loved the freedom of the outdoors: he was a rock climber, former youth climbing team member and junior coach at the Boulder Rock Club; a backcountry skier and former Eldora Mountain Ski Club member; a kayaking enthusiast and former junior counselor at Passages Adventure Camp in Richmond, VA; and Little League baseball player. Jasper was bilingual, played violin, and often served as a teacher's aide. He was perhaps best known for his love of music, unrestrained lust for life, and raucous humor.

Jasper was adored as a son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin, and friend. He is survived by a mother, stepfather and two siblings (Boulder, CO), and father Mike Pont, stepmother Jamie Justice, and brother Tobe Justice Pont (Winston-Salem, NC); his grandparents Laurel and William Pont, Dennis Justice, Sharon Justice; cousin Aria Pont-Owen; and many other aunts, uncles, and cousins scattered throughout the US and Canada. Sharing in grief are the many loved ones who were as close as family.

A celebration of life honoring Jasper Pont will be held 10am-1pm on June 9, 2019 at the summit of Flagstaff Mountain in Boulder. No flowers please. Donations are to be directed to the family for services and to provide resources for persons in crisis; please contact [email protected] for donation inquiries.

If you are struggling with mental health or addictions that may seem insurmountable, know that every day is a new beginning; every breath is a fresh start. We believe that you can and will make it if help is sought. We would have given anything for Jasper to experience complete freedom in this lifetime, but it is not too late for you to find peace.

If you are reading this with judgment, please take this time to educate yourself about the disease of addiction and mental disorders, because it is a disease. It is not a choice or a weakness. And chances are very good that someone you know is struggling with it, and that person needs and deserves your empathy and support.

I am laying in bed tonight in a different state then I was in when we last saw each other. That was 2 years ago this month. It was the last time I would see you. We had a few conversations over text after I left, some good and some bad. Tonight, just like a lot of nights recently, one of our many conversations runs through my mind and I all at once feel full and in great company, and then saddened and empty. I listen to Indian Summer by Best Happening and I think of the times you asked me to play it in my car. The last time on our way into the mountains. The last day we spent with each other we sat in our underwear in the sun on red rocks that had been there for millions of years and are still there in the moonlit foothills of Boulder as I type this. We talked about many things that day. We wondered if Indians had ever sat on the rock like we were. If dinosaurs slept on it. Or if a whale had ever died and floated to the bottom of the sea that used to be there and faded away with time on that very spot. We also acknowledged that just as the rock had been around long before us, it will be around long after we have died. Whenever I make it back to those foothills, I will find that rock and I will know for sure that one day in the past, two friends sat in silence. Smiling and living on the very rock that I am sitting on. Then I will climb down, using the skills you taught me, and I will drive down the mountain.

Jasper. I still remember your infectious smile. Even when I was mad at you for goofing off at practice, I couldn't stop smiling because I knew you were just being you. You are missed my friend.

When you let someone into your life, and they find their way into your heart, and then they leave this earth, you will be filled with grief. But, I wouldn't trade all the time I had with you, Jasper, even if it would make my pain go away. I will cherish your love, your wit, and the way you made me laugh for the rest of my life. I love you, Jasper Pont.

I can't stop crying. So tragic. I'll never forget Jasper and how brilliant, kind, and funny this kid was. How much time he spent with our family. What an idol he was to our children. How looking in from the outside had every advantage...we are all vunerable regardless of race, parenting, advantages. Let us pray, wish, hope it never happens to our children, and send all the love we can muster to the MANY people who adored him. RIP Jasper. You are loved, adored and admired so far above your demons. You will never be forgotten.

Dear Mike, Jamie, Dennis, Sharon, and Tobe,

I am so sorry for the loss of your son, grandson, and brother, Jasper.

I did not know Jasper well, having only a few personal memories of him, but I have enjoyed seeing his spirit through the lenses of a camera and the eyes of friends and family. He seems like a young man who loved his tribe, enjoyed the outdoors, and laughed at a good joke.

Praying for you all at this difficult time.
