Jay DeNeff Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral & Cremation Service - North Chapel on Mar. 29, 2026.
Jay Edwin DeNeff passed away on March 27, 2026. He was born on April 3, 1930, to Peter and Frances (Scanlon) DeNeff. He was the youngest of nine children. He attended Marion College where he met his wife, Evelyn (Christler). Together, they had four children.

Even at a young age, Jay knew he would grow up to be a pastor, but he had no idea how far his ministry and legacy would stretch. He ministered in the Wesleyan Church for over 40 years, serving communities in Hastings, MI, Pontiac, MI, Sturgis, MI, Flint, MI, and Brooksville, FL. He spent four of those years as a chaplain for the police department in Flint, Michigan. He also volunteered on many boards, including the general board of the Wesleyan Church International.
He quietly served his congregations with integrity, leading by example. He raised his family to love Jesus and love others. Together with his wife, Evelyn, he lived a life of faith, trusting God through every circumstance. He was playful and funny, and loved to spend time with his grandkids.
He is remembered by his children, Steve (Lori) DeNeff and Marcia DeNeff; grandchildren, Nicholas DeNeff and Ashley (Patrick) Cooper; great grandchildren, Maddox Cooper and Everly Cooper; beloved nieces and nephews, and many friends from all the places he ministered (both in and out of the Church).
He is preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn; son, Douglas; daughter, Jacqueline; son-in-law, Lawrence White; brothers, Stanley, Ivan, and Harris; sisters, Jane, Lois Johnson, Marlyn Kleis, Elaine Steenwyk, and Norah Mokma; and his parents.

The family will receive visitors from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, at College Wesleyan Church, 200 E. 38th St., Marion, IN.

Immediately following the time of visitation, a service to celebrate Jay's life will begin at 1:00 pm with Rev. Steve DeNeff officiating. Burial will take place at Grant Memorial Park.

Yesterday

Last night, I learned that my first pastor, Rev. Jay DeNeff, passed away. He was a special figure in my life, not only because he was my first pastor during my younger years, but also because of his wonderful qualities.

He had a remarkable ability to connect with kids like me. He could make the sound of a train whistle and happily did so whenever we asked, much to our delight. After the morning or evening services, he would bring out a gumball machine filled mostly with M&Ms, so we could grab a few as we left for home.

I also fondly remember the golf games he played with my dad. I even witnessed Pastor DeNeff get a hole-in-one once, which I thought was amazing as a young kid. There was a time when I had a terrible stomachache at school, and since my mom couldn't drive, Pastor DeNeff picked her up and took me to the doctor. He also drove my brother, Brian, and my dad to Borgess Hospital late at night when my brother was diagnosed with diabetes.

What stands out most in my memory is that Pastor Jay DeNeff was always there for us. He was present! Thank you for being such a wonderful godley example!

My prayers and thoughts to the family!

Bradley Harris
